Well, the BLM season is fi nally here, and before long, the BLM's will be starting to fi ll up with snowbirds. I still think it is quite remarkable to be able to live in a comfort- able climate for several months, close to town, for about one dollar per day. Since there are no hook-ups out there, each rig must be self – suffi - cient as far as power, water and waste management. For power, if you are looking to "so- larize" your RV, I do suggest you go through your RV and come up with a "power budget". Identify those things that you would like to power with your solar system. Write down the number of Watts it consumes, and es- timate how many hours a day you will be using it. For example, if you have a 32-inch TV, and it consumes 100W, and you watch 4 hours of TV a day, then that is a total of 400 Watt-Hours (Wh). Continue by adding up all the devices you will want to power from your solar system, times the hours you will be using them. These can be Tiny House EASY BANANA NUT BREAD 2 eggs 4 very ripe bananas 1 pkg yellow cake mix (dry) Beat eggs til well mixed. Add ripe bananas and beat til well blended. Add dry cake mix, to egg mixture (that's right!—no liquids) When totally blended Add ½ Cup chop nuts or ½ Cup chocolate chips Pour into 3 ½ X 4 ¾ loaf pan. Bake @ 350 for 45 min. radios, DVD players, laptops, micro- wave ovens, etc. Forget about trying to power your A/C, since these suck up way too much juice. In this area of the country, expect at least 6 hours of productive solar en- ergy per day. A 100 W solar panel, subtracting for losses, will deliver at least 450 Wh of power (75W x 6 hours) per day. Besides the solar panels, your system will need a charge controller, batteries, wiring (duh), and an inverter. The goal here is to not have to fi re up the generator! Generators pollute, they're noisy, and they require regular maintenance. Not only that, but they will suck up your gas! In an upcoming article, I will go through the numbers in more detail.
