Many thanks to Isaiah 58 for pro- viding a location for the annual Community Picnic Friday, August 11th, "hosted by local Quartzsite churches". Appeared to be a good turnout to partake of the great food offered and many volunteers made things run smoothly while I was enjoying my meal. But most noticeably missing were pastors from the other local churches! The most recent Desert Messenger lists twelve Quartzsite "Places of Wor- ship" and while some may close for the summer I know some are still open. So why did we see only Pas- tor Linda and Pastor Wayne of Isa- iah 58? Thank you Pastors Linda and Wayne. I did not approach you at the picnic because I could see how busy you were with many other people and as I was leaving I did not want to interrupt your well deserved break as you were sitting on the bench sharing a quiet mo- ment. Many of these casualties are a result of care- less or unsuspecting motorists who attempt to navigate fl ooded roads. The National Weather Service now warns anyone who comes to a fl ooded roadway, "Turn around… don't drown!" TM Follow these safety rules: • If fl ooding occurs, get to higher ground. Stay away from fl ood-prone areas, including dips, low spots, val- leys, ditches, washes, etc. • Avoid fl ooded areas or those with rapid water fl ow. Do not attempt to cross a fl owing stream. It takes only six inches of fast fl owing water to sweep you off your feet. • Don't allow children to play near high water, storm drains or ditches. Hidden dangers could lie beneath the water. • Flooded roads could have signifi - cant damage hidden by fl oodwaters. NEVER drive through fl oodwaters or on fl ooded roads. If your vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and seek higher ground. Water only two feet deep can fl oat away most automobiles. • Do not camp or park your vehicle along streams and washes, particular- ly when threatening conditions exist. • Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize fl ood dangers. • Monitor NOAA Weather Radio or your local media for vital weather related information.
