Sept. 7 Town of Quartzsite invites every- one to attend the next meeting of Neighborhood Watch at 6:00 PM, on THURSDAY, SEPT. 7, 2017, at the Quartzsite Community Center. Chief William Ponce said he looks forward to working with the resi- dents to create a safer community. Launched in 1972, Neighbor- hood Watch counts on citizens to organize themselves and work with law enforcement to keep a trained eye and ear on their communities, while demonstrating their pres- ence at all times of day and night. Sponsored by the National Sher- iffs' Association (NSA), the Nation- al Crime Prevention Council says, "Neighborhood watch is one of the oldest and most effective crime prevention programs in the coun- try, bringing citizens together with law enforcement to deter crime and make communities safer." Jackson Brown, Jr. As I reviewed the past month's events, I realized we're living some unusual times. The month started with powerful monsoon winds dam- aging many businesses on W. Main St. across from Pilot Truck Stop. We witnessed violence erupt in Charlot- tesville, Va. as protests showed the ugly side of humanity. But then we witnessed people coming together for the Great American Solar Eclipse thrilling millions across U.S. I was able to attend the League of AZ Cit- ies & Towns Conference, alongside five Quartzsite council members, promoting Quartzsite as a desti- nation location. We then watched strangers of all races helping each another during the fl ooding in Texas from Hurricane Harvey. On the other end of the spectrum, fi res are raging in Montana, Oregon, Wash- ington, and southern California. Now we're watching Hurricane Irma intensifying in the Atlantic. September is National Prepared- ness Month. Sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) within the De- partment of Homeland Security, National Preparedness Month en- courages Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, schools, and communities. FEMA's new Administrator Brock Long said on Face the Nation Sun- day, "What we need are for elected offi cials at all levels of government to hit the reset button, sit down, evaluate where their programs are with their state emergency direc- tors as well as their local emergency management directors, and make sure that they have everything they need to increase their levels of self- suffi ciency." Don't Wait. Communicate. Make a family emergency plan today. September is National Preparedness Month. Learn more at www.ready.gov/September. Just Rambling... When the streams would overflow, but they never knew the thanks of overflowing tanks or trailers under tow. If you're ever out in the Great Alone and the night never seems too fold. Give thought to the old prospector and his constant search for gold. But keep one eye, on that Great Night Sky and one on the next chuck hole.
