ALPHA CHAPTER OF THETA XI SUMMER 2017 ALPHABET Alpha History Brings New Charm to 1490 Sage Avenue B y now, most who have at least glanced at recent issues of the AlphaBet have become used to seeing photos of the ongoing, truly historic renovations of our over 85-year-old chapter house listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2013. In addition to the much-needed upgrades and repairs to the rooms and infrastructure, homage to Alpha's history has been incorporated into the living spaces as the renovations proceed. New artistic elements, emblematic of the chapter and the fraternity since its founding in 1864, now adorn the walls and floors of 1490 Sage Avenue. James Soisson '94 (A1366) has led the efforts to give these symbols and reminders of Alpha's past a permanent home in the chapter house. Historian Matt Glaccum '92 (A1324) has assisted Brother Soisson in determining the proper usage and placement of Alpha's cherished insignia as construction continues. Brother Soisson has worked extensively with Czar Floors to craft the designs out of stone and wood and breathe new life into old engravings, some dating back to the very beginnings of the fraternity. Costing a modest 2-3 percent of the renovation budget, the artwork is a hit with alumni and actives alike. It allows for a dressing up of the public spaces, including even the more mundane locations in the house. As you can imagine, these can only add to Alpha's charm for the all-important task of attracting the best to join the fraternity and live at historic 1490 Sage Avenue. The photos will give you a good sense of what has already been accomplished. New works are on the horizon, so keep your eyes open for the latest. Better yet, come back for Homecoming or 6294 with those who you knew back in the day and see for yourself these wonderful reminders of Alpha's past. Yours in the Bonds, David Fowkes '89 (A1275) Campaign Chairman P.S. Your donations to our fundraising efforts support projects like these. Added in August 2015: Perhaps the most recognizable symbol of our fraternity after the badge, this 5' x 7' inlaid wood replica adorns the floor in the foyer. The original design was created by Frank Lanagan 1905 (A196) in 1912. Edwin F. Gillette 1884 (A100) revised the design in 1932 most notably by adding the squire's helmet. Added in August 2015: The oldest symbol of our fraternity designed by the founders themselves, this re-imagined version of the badge graces the basement floor in front of the bar in silver, blue, white, and red. Special lighting brings the graphic alive in just the right fashion. Added in February 2017: With the dedication of Edwin Gillette 1884 (A100) to Theta Xi, it is only fitting that one of his cover-art creations for the Unicorn of Theta Xi served as inspiration for this 36" x 48" marble mosaic found in the first-floor bathroom. Added in January 2016: Before there was a coat of arms, this insignia was used for fraternity functions and business as Theta Xi developed a national identity at the turn of the century. This 24" x 30" replica may be found in the second-floor bathroom.
