Indiana Gamma Chapter Pete Dunbar '85 Finds Lifelong Friends Through Indiana Gamma L ooking back on one of his first memories at Indiana Gamma, Pete Dunbar '85 has a vivid memory of "Moon Unit," aka Scott Nichols '84, a 50-gallon bucket of water, and a great amount of laughter. Thirty years later, Pete contin- ues to hold great pride in his fraternity, and remains best friends with men he met as an undergraduate. "I think about the lines in the True Gentleman and it has given me direction and I can honestly say I try to live my life that way," he said. "I know when I meet someone else from our Chapter or another ΣAE chapter, it's an immediate connection." Staying friends with fraternity brothers has given Pete a lifetime of favorite mem- ories—most of which involve Jim Fissinger '83 and Scott Langdon '85. In addition to his Indiana Gamma memories, he also remembers and appreciates his involvement outside of the fraternity and his field of study. Through his out- side activities, Pete was able to build diverse friendships and immerse himself in experiences he wouldn't have had otherwise. "Be honest with yourself. Know what you really like to do and do those things more often," Pete advises current undergraduates. "If you stay true to yourself, that will take you wherever you want to go." Pete lived far away from the Chapter for a number of years, but in 2007, when he moved back to Indiana, he decided to reconnect with Indiana Gamma. Al- though he does not have any sons looking to attend IU, he has gotten to know other young men and recommends potential recruits to the Chapter. "It's great getting to know these young men and getting feedback from them about what a terrific house we have and hearing all the great things they have to say," Pete said. "Hearing this routinely gets me more excited to be involved." Whether attending a golf outing, tailgate, or the Little 500, Pete enjoys meeting brothers from different eras and encourages any alumni who have lost touch with the Chapter to reconnect. "At every event, I meet someone from a differ- ent era and it's great," Pete said. "Come to an event and reintroduce yourself. There's a common bond there that will only lead to 'great to see you,' 'hope you're well,' and 'how can I help?'" Pete and his wife, Lea, have three children and live in Carmel, Ind. Pete has worked in the banking industry for 32 years, spending 10 years specifically in wealth management. In his free time, Pete enjoys golfing, working on home im- provement projects, and attending live performances such as music and theater events. He can be reached at petedunbar@alumni.iu.edu.
