New name adds latest twist Underlying things destroy fruit. This statement was brought vividly alive to my attention as I was inspect- ing my cherry tomato plant to see if there were any new tomatoes forming. I saw the telltale signs of a tomato worm so I began to look carefully. Sure enough, there it was, hanging upside down on a branch. I plucked it off and threw it to the chicken. The tomato worm was on the underside of the branch. It was the same color as the branch and not easi- ly detected. The worm's natural color- ing is a camouflage so it won't be dis- covered. It is a great example of under- lying hidden sin. The word underlying means: latent, repressed, suppressed, unrevealed, undisclosed, unexpressed, concealed, hidden, or masked. King David well understood the power of hidden sin. When he sinned with Bathsheba, he tried everything to cover his secret sin. He brought her husband back from fighting in his army. When Uriah repeatedly did not go home to his wife, David sent word to his commander to place Uriah on the front lines and then withdraw from him so he would be killed. God exposed David's hidden sin through the prophet Nathan. 2 Samuel 12:9 says, "Why have you despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in His sight?" Then in verse 12 he says, "For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, before the sun." David's one secret sin had severe consequences that carried on through the rest of his life. In Psalm 19:12 David cried out to Arrested on Thursday after authorities said he violated his probation from a 2010 check fraud conviction, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula told a judge his real name was Mark Bas- seley Youseff. He said he'd been using that name since 2002, even though he went by Nakoula in his fraud case. The full story about Nakoula and the video ''Innocence of Muslims'' still isn't known more than two weeks after violence erupted in Egypt and Libya, where Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others were killed in Beng- hazi. Violence related to the film has since spread, killing dozens more. Citing a lengthy pattern of deception and the potential to flee, U.S. Central District Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal ordered Nakoula to remain in prison without bond until another judge can hold a hearing to determine if he broke the terms of his probation. ''The court has a lack of trust in this defendant at this time,'' Segal said. Win a queen-size quilt, pieced and machine quilt- ed by Krista Yokum of Barefoot Quilting. This custom-made quilt, using the "Elizabeth Rose" pat- tern, was donated by Erda Fleming of In Stitches Quilt Shop as the featured fundraising item at the 3rd annual Oktoberfest start- ing at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct.13 at St. Peter's Epis- copal Church. Quilt opportunity tick- ets are available for $1 each or $5 for six tickets. You need not be present to win. Tickets may be pur- chased from Gail Acheson at 527-5938, Debbie Niskala at 526-1802 or St. Peter's at 527-5205. Saturday, September 29, 2012 – Daily News 5C Underlying things the Lord and said, "...cleanse me from secret sins." David wanted a clean heart before God. He didn't want his sin to separate him from his rela- tionship with the Lord. David wrote Psalm 66. In verse 18 it says, "If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear." Hebrews 12:2 says, "Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." Proverbs 28:13 says, "He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confess- es and forsakes them will have mercy." We camouflage our sins when we which would have become tomatoes. Matthew 7:20 gives us a guiding life principle. It says, "Therefore by their fruits you will know them." Hidden sin leaves a recog- nizable trail of no spiritual fruit. Marilyn Adams GodTalk excuse them rather than acknowledge them for what they are. Sin is not a weakness, nor is it just the way we are, or the way we were born. Sin is sin, something we choose to place above our relationship with God, irrespective of how we want to classify it. That is why the prophets so often equate sin with adultery, which is the placing of another person above our relationship with husband or wife. The tomato worm may think it is camouflaged by being the same color as the branch. However a discerning eye will look for the telltale signs of stubby branches. The worm on my plant had eaten a lot of blossoms Everyone means you. You too can have a relationship with the Lord Jesus, just by taking Him at His word. Read again the words of John 3:16 which say, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." That means He stands ready to deal even with our secret sins from the depths of His love – once we let go of them. Marilyn Adams leads visitation ministries to sick and incarcerated women in Tehama County. She has gift for interceding and for praying for the sick, and has been a steadfast contributor to GodTalk since its beginning. My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples." Hid- den sin not only destroys spiritual fruit, it brings God no glory, which is what we were created to bring Him.
