Red Bluff had taken a 31-20 lead midway through the third quarter when Tucker Gulliford busted a 93- yard touchdown run up the left side- line. But the Spartans offense sput- tered for most of the second half, producing just 40 yards outside of Gulliford's run. Gulliford's touchdown had come just two plays after Shasta's starting quarterback K.C. Toombs was knocked out of the game. Toombs had given the Spartans fits, complet- ing 11-of-16 passes for 158 yards and scoring twice with his legs. Odell struggled at first to fill Toombs' shoes, but the Wolves got a break when Bryce Hayden blocked a Red Bluff punt with about 10 minutes remaining in the game. Shasta tailback Avery Holley scored a play later from eight yards out. The Wolves missed their 2- point conversion try, but cut the deficit to 31-26. Red Bluff followed with its best drive of the second half, but it even- tually ended when quarterback Gar- rett Sandow was sacked on consec- utive plays. with five minutes to play, but the Spartans defense forced a three-and- out. The first half was almost a com- pletely different game as both offenses ran up and down the field. Red Bluff dropped their second second offensive play of the game when Wyatt Houghtby jumped a rout and returned an interception from 20 yards out for a Red Bluff touchdown. that would feature the theme of their offense for the first two quarters — Toombs finding senior wideout Gavin Graham. Graham would finish with 152 yards receiving and 10 receptions on the night. Toombs ended Shasta's second Shasta countered with a drive strong running of Gulliford and Dil- lon Milton. Sandow hooked up with Levi Culp for a pair of big plays and Milton eventually capped the drive with a 1-yard rush and a 13-6 Spar- tans lead. It took just two plays before Shasta responded as Toombs hooked up with Graham on a 45- yard pitch and catch. Then Toombs took it in himself from 31 yards out. Shasta took the lead when Toombs found Josh Rubidoux on a fade route for a 2-point conversion. The lead didn't last long as on drive with a 7-yard strike to Jake Callaway, although the Wolves missed the point after attempt and trailed 7-6. Their 2-point conversion failed but the Spartans got the ball back on Shasta's ensuing snap when R.J. Nunez recovered a fumble with two minutes left before halftime. Sandow drove Red Bluff down to the Shasta 7-yard-line, but the Spartans had to settle for a Connor Ross 24-yard field goal and went into halftime leading 24-20. Sandow finished 10-for-24 for 183 yards. Culp had three catches for 55 yards. Houghtby had three catches for 29 yards. Fox, Kyle Case, Jared Poore and Milton each had one reception. Gulliford finished with 11 carries for 144 yards. Milton carried 14 times for 33 yards. Case had six rushes for 13 yards and Mike Stone got one carry that didn't go any- where. Next up for Red Bluff is a trip to Chico to take on the Panthers.
