Many of you remember dads or uncles who were hams back in the day of monster radios that used tubes and took up massive amounts of space. Today the modern ham shack can ac- tually talk to the world from a small desk. Oh yes, I still have friends that have more radios and stuff than I could stack on my desk or even fi t in my shack, but it's like any other hobby or obsession. Gone are the days of having to spend thousands of dollars to talk on the airwaves. I have a saying, "Give me a month of your time, a hundred bucks and I will have you on the air". Most people don't believe me but it's true. Now you may not be talk- ing to your friends on the east coast or Alaska, but you will be in touch with some of the friendli- est people I know in the local area. Yes it can be much costlier to join the bigs in ham radio, but a little at a time. Many of my ham friends are very happy with an inexpensive portable transceiv- er and local communications. With my Handy Talkie (HT) I can reach clear to Bouse, Parker, Lake Havasu and west into California, as far as Desert Center. Blythe is a snap. I talk worldwide on a very modest budget, but most of the fun is local coms (communications.) Now most are saying something like, "I have a cell phone, I don't need ham radio." They are sadly not understanding the limits of phone com- munications, nor are they aware that Amateur Radio is the fi rst social networking media ever…. except for maybe smoke signals! First of all it's fun. Second, if there is an emergency or disaster, land lines may go down, cell towers will be limited to 1st responders only and the only means of communication with the outside world will be the radio waves. Ham radio is the largest, most effi cient network of radio communica- tion there is in the world. Maybe you can't get to your family in the Midwest with your HT, but you can reach many hams in the local area that have nationwide or worldwide capability and will be standing be to help relay your messages. Thirdly, it's FUN, oh yeah I said that. Right here in the Q we have several "Nets" that regularly meet on the air; some formal, some not, and most are open to all hams and friendly. There is one group that meets weekly for breakfast and it is a great time of fellowship. From the Ham Shack In the near future I will be giving you more spe- cifi cs regarding Amateur Radio, but today I just wanted to get to know you and let you know we are here. There are 80 currently licensed hams just in Quartzsite. That number fl uctuates obvi- ously but these are just the ones that have the Q listed as their home address. In the winter there are hundreds of hams here. Stay tuned friends. Eddy Kilowat, not his real name, received his Tech- nician Amateur Radio license and call sign KK6EKF in May of 2013, earned his General license in May of 2014 and fi nally his Amateur Extra in May of 2016. His current call sign is W7AZQ for AriZonaQuartz- site. He is very active in ham radio not only on the local level but is working on contacts in all 50 states and as many countries as he can. Eddy is very inter- ested in being an "Elmer" or mentor to as many new hams as he can. He enjoys teaching others as well as promoting ham radio to the community. He is a Volunteer Examiner and lives full time in Quartzsite, Az. with his wife and two fur babies.
