LETTERS TO THE EDITOR LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Cumberland County’s Representative Sets the Record Straight Dear Editor: A recent Letter to the Editor distorted my record and work in Congress to help build a better and brighter Fayetteville and Cumberland County. Let’s set the record straight: • Worked every year to help provide increase for soldiers pay which has huge ripple effect in Fayetteville and Cumberland County; • Secured hundreds of millions of dollars for military construction projects at Ft. Bragg and Pope AFB which has a positive impact on contractors and small businesses in Cumberland County and surrounding counties; • Secured funds for Methodist University’s Physician Assistant Program and Methamphetamine Program which provides personnel to strengthen and protect our communities; • Helped secure tens of millions of dollars for local fire departments, EMS operations, and local police and sheriff departments for equipment and infrastructure to help protect our homes, businesses, and communities; • Helped secure tens of millions for local transportation projects to help with roads and bridges; • Helped secure funds for education programs, opportunities, and advancement for Cumberland County students; and • Helped secure funds for improvements at the Fayetteville Airport which is critical to industry and job creation opportunities. In addition, my office has heard from several Cumberland County entities – Stedman-Wade Health Services and the Cumberland County School System — thanking us for supporting the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act because it created and saved jobs. Specifically, Stedman/Wade hired a medical provider which has increased revenues and allowed the health center to retain one position and hire an additional front desk position, and Cumberland County Schools saved 524 jobs – that’s real people with real families and real bills to pay! Finally, we are moving ahead with plans for the jobs of tomorrow, so please join us for our “Green Enterprise Resource Summit” on April 19 at Cape Fear Community College’s North Campus in Castle Hayne where we will focus on resources that can assist green business and green job creation. “Green” means go for jobs! Working together, we can and we will build on the foundation that has been laid and make Fayetteville and Cumberland County a better place to live and work! Mike McIntyre Congressman City Should Say Thanks, But No Thanks to Vietnam Partnership Dear Editor: The Vietnam War is a distant memory for most except those that fought or lost loved ones. Most young people (35 or less) could not begin to articulate the reasons for the war or explain the convoluted outcome. To suggest that we must now “heal” the regretable Vietnam War is to focus on a non-issue in our community. It’s over. We have more significant matters that affect Fayetteville today. Vietnam is communist but is capitalist in the manner in which they operate their economy, just as communist China does theirs. We should just let this initiative by the nice folk of SocTrang pass with a polite thanks but no thanks.
