And you can bet “a green thing is a good thing!” I appreciate Mr. Bill, Joy and Janice allowing me to use this space to talk about one of my favorite subjects. Green! Wow! I’m so proud to live in a community like Fayetteville that takes so much pride in its natural and renewable resources. However, don’t think because of all the recent fanfare and publicity about “going green” that Fayetteville and Cumberland County are just now getting on board with environmental responsibility. No way! They’ve been at it for a while! Sustainable Sandhills, the Cape Fear River Trail and the Fayetteville Beautiful Project are just a few of the wonderful accomplishments that come to mind. There are many more ongoing environmental initiatives being implemented by local governmental agencies that may not be as obvious. It’s a fact that for years and years organizations like PWC (Hi Wally Watt Watcher and Willy Water Drop!), the Fayetteville Storm Water Utility (Hey Stormie!) and the Fayetteville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (FAMPO) have provided our community with programs and relevant information concerning conservation and environmental responsibility. For years, before it was trendy or popular, these organizations formed partnerships with local schools, businesses and organizations to educate teachers, students and parents about the importance of being environmentally responsible and how we could and should be good stewards of the earth’s natural resources. These organizations need to be recognized and applauded. The one thing that I like the most is that all three of these organizations realized that young children are the key to changing the world and how we live Internet Directory ............................ 12 Calendar ........................................... 16 Concert Connection ........................ 22 TV ..................................................... 24 Movie Review ..................................24 Movie Schedule ............................... 25 Free Wheelin’ Feelin’ ....................... 26 News of the Weird ........................... 27 Horoscopes/Advice Goddess ......... 27 Classifieds ........................................ 28 Games .............................................. 30 Dining Guide .................................... 31 Truman (and Up & Coming Weekly) Salutes the Green Initiatives In Our Community in it. They also know, as does any good parent, that to educate, change attitudes, enstow responsibility and create an awareness to the sensitivities of our environment that this process must begin with young children. Wow! All these organizations need to be applauded for their dedication, accomplishments and resources. So do all the dedicated Cumberland County teachers and educators in our public, private and Christian schools for using these resources and giving environmental issues such a high priority. Those guys are the greatest! Hey, being green is keen. And, living here in Fayetteville is fun and exciting. Our community is the near perfect example of what can be accomplished when everyone works together for the betterment of the community and the world. Up & Coming Weekly, Kidsville News! and I are very proud to be a part of this important and successful “green” initiative. April is here and along with it come national celebrations of Earth Day and Arbor Day. But remember, you don’t neeed a special day to live green. You can make a difference every day! Enjoy our “Green” issue of Up & Coming Weekly and thanks for reading. 24 7/24
