Proceeds from the event help fun the school’s Bluegrass Music Program. On March 9, Manton School hosted its school fundraiser, Bluegrass on the Mountain, for the third year in a row. The fundraiser includes a tri-tip dinner, live and silent auction and concert. This year the school brought a phe- nomenal group, the Voet- berg family, from Chehalis, Wash. The Voetbergs are a home- schooled family with 10 children who perform together. “They are all profi- cient on one or more instruments with an incredible knack to entertain” said Angie Skillman, fundraiser coordinator. They participate in competition fiddle events, including Red Bluff ’s Western Open as well as Idaho’s National Fiddle contest. This was great experience for the Manton school kids. Opening for the Voet- bergs were kids from the Manton School Blue- grass Music Program. Some 23-24 students participated. The pro- gram is in it’s third year. All students in the kindergarten through third grade are learning the fiddle. Students in grades four through eight have the opportunity to continue fiddle or learn guitar, bass, mandolin or banjo. The fundraiser pro- ceeds are split between the Manton School Com- munity Club, which pro- vides extra curricular activities for the students and the music program. Last year’s pro- proceeds paid for a music teacher to come to the school couple hours every week for the school year. “It’s been difficult to market this event — the gym can only accommo- date 250 people,” Skill- man said. “The first year we really advertised and we sold out a couple of weeks in advance-I had 60 people call that want- ed tickets and we could- n’t accommodate them. This year I hardly adver- tised and we had nearly 200 in the gym that night.” The music program is $1,500 shy from continu- ing to bring a music teacher in on a weekly basis for the 2010-2011 school year. Donations can be made to the pro- gram by calling the school at 474-3167.
