Pacific Northwest Alumni of Washington Chapter of Alpha Delta Phi University of Washington P.O. Box 442100 Lawrence, KS 66044-2100 Address Service Requested Washington Alpha Delt e Honoring Our Heroes Brothers in Arms 22-Day Challenge A lpha Delta Phi International announced a new fraternitywide philanthropic campaign at the convention in August. While some of our chapters, like Washington, have their own successful philanthropic campaign, most chapters do not. This new philanthropic campaign will provide an established annual program that every chapter can participate in. Inspired by our tradition of honoring brothers who served in global conflicts, the Brothers in Arms Challenge will attack the problem of active duty soldier and veteran suicide. Every day in the United States and Canada, 22 veterans take their own lives. Burdened with the stigma associated with mental health issues and the military shame surrounding post-traumatic stress, they turn to suicide as their only option to relieve suffering. The Brothers in Arms Challenge is a call to action for our chapters to get out in their communities and make an impact. Over the course of 22 days, chapters are encouraged to raise awareness on their campus, volunteer in their communities, and fundraise for Stop Soldier Suicide and VETS Canada. In the first year of the Brothers in Arms Challenge, our chapters collectively raised more than $30,000. The proceeds from the campaign will go to two organizations that support the mission of the challenge: Stop Soldier Suicide for our U.S. chapters and VETS Canada for our Canadian chapters. Founded by Nick Black, Johns Hopkins '10, Stop Soldier Suicide has created a unique national and community-based network of volunteers and partner organizations providing a range of solutions for active-duty service members, veterans, and family members. They are also one of the leading awareness and outreach charities to change the way the U.S. thinks about mental health care and the stigma of receiving treatment. VETS Canada started in 2010 to help homeless and at-risk veterans reintegrate into civilian life. In 2015, VETS Canada launched its Guitars for Vets program, which offers peer support through guitar lessons. Xaipe, Bob Gilbert '81 International Board of Governors • Sprinkler pipes are not to be used as chin-up bars. • Fire and life safety is always a concern. How do the active members balance utilities, recruitment, social, and meal costs? By using the Suzy Orman Bucket System from Good Morning America. Between the 12 Wells Fargo accounts, it took some time and more than we need to discuss here, but the chapter is finally on a well-established bill collection system used by more than 300 Greek chapters. Amazing given the amount of control required when every payment needs to be approved by an alumnus. We decided to break from our usual event in the Quad and host a dinner auction for the Stanley Stamm Camp. We invited Alpha Delt brothers, their parents, and alumni. It was great to have alumni there and we expect to see even more as the event progresses! Overall, we raised more than $45,000 for Stanley Stamm Camp so that patients at Seattle Children's Hospital would be able to enjoy a summer camp experience they otherwise wouldn't because of their illnesses or disability. We were honored to host the Stamm Camp coordinator and Dr. Stanley Stamm's grandson at the event. This event could not have been pulled off without the resounding support from the active chapter, Seattle Children's Hospital, and the generous alumni that attended. We hope to see you all there next year! Xaipe, Eric Berquist '17• Eli Brewer '17 Follow us online at www.alphadelt.org. Bubble Bash Raises $45,000 for Stanley Stamm Camp Late News Flash!
