Our Needs and Opportunities W hile the Kappa experience is certainly more than the physical structure of the chapter house, our home undoubtedly plays a significant role in the development of our sisters and serves as a proud symbol of our shared values and goals. College campus living has changed significantly in the past 10 to 15 years. The experience is different than what many of our alumnae may remember. Residential facilities are the second most important factor in the college decision-making process behind the availability of a student's intended major. This is understandable considering that students spend 70% of their time within their living environment. We must make a major investment in our chapter house if we are to remain competitive, provide a quality living environment, and ensure that we are providing a home that offers both community and privacy. THE GROWING DEMAND FOR GREEK LIFE Chapter size at the University of Kentucky has grown considerably, and we no longer have enough space for all members to meet together. The average chapter size for 16 sororities is more than 250 members. The demand for Greek life and the opportunity to live in the chapter house is greater than ever as is the need for common and educational space. We know that connecting in the chapter house is critical to sisters establishing a lifelong commitment to Kappa. It is our top priority to accommodate the growing membership numbers and enhance each collegian's chapter experience through our chapter home. RECENT GROWTH OF THE UNIVERSITY • 5,000 freshmen enrolled for the third consecutive year • Over 22,000 undergraduate students • 53% of the student population is female • 82% of freshmen are returning to campus According to the 2017 U.S. News & World Report statistics above, the University of Kentucky continues to grow. Many credit Greek life with the continued success, as studies have found that students engaged in a fraternity or sorority life are retained and graduate at a rate higher than their non-affiliated peers. With unprecedented growth comes new and improved housing facilities. The University of Kentucky is developing plans for updated Greek housing and several chapters are pursuing new builds or renovations. Furthermore, the university's master plan calls for a complete renovation of every residential unit on campus in order to ensure top students continue to attend UK. Thus, we must ensure Kappa remains a premier sorority on campus by providing our members competitive housing options. This will ensure we continue to attract the highest quality members.
