AlwAys Anchored PAge 2 Because of all that Alpha Omega gave to her, Sara volunteers her time. She is excited the chapter is back on campus and believes it will build a stronger connection with alumnae. She has been paired with the chapter president, Grace Veneklasen '17, in the recently implemented Aunt Hannah program, which serves as a way for alumnae to mentor and develop friendships with collegians. "Grace is a great young lady. As the mother of two boys, it is fun working with such a fun, intelligent young woman." Sara encourages others to also give of their time. "Together we can make a difference. It is exemplary of the sisterhood." Sara enjoys the new connection with the chapter and says the bonds of friendship formed when she was an undergraduate are still strong. She stays in touch with many sisters, including Cindy Altemus Lazar '83 and Kristy Miller Hanson '84, who was her roommate. Sara is a member of the Katy-West Houston Delta Gamma Alumnae Association and Fort Bend Panhellenic. She has sent many Delta Gamma sponsorship forms for potential new members at Texas schools, as well as LSU, the University of Alabama, Ole Miss, Mizzou and now the University of Arkansas. "It's exciting for me when the group gets the results back and I discover that a young lady I sponsored has become a potential new member with Delta Gamma." Sara lives in Richmond, Texas, with her husband, Kent (who is still traumatized from his friends tying him to the Delta Gamma anchor). They have two sons, Ryan and Matt. Sara says, "Somehow I raised two Texas Aggies!" She likes to play tennis and golf, enjoys traveling and volunteers for the Boy Scouts of America and the Houston Humane Society. She can be reached at the_science_mom@yahoo.com. (Continued from page 1) "Together We Can Make a Difference" S eeking friends and stability, Paulette Spencer Johnson, M.D. '59 decided to join a sorority. As an only child in a military family, she had moved around a lot, making it difficult to forge friendships. "The Delta Gamma motto and the women were great, and that is what attracted me to the chapter." The alumnae were also involved and supportive, which demonstrated the lifetime connection that Paulette was searching for. Paulette recalls that Sue Stonecipher '56 recruited her. "She probably had the most influence on me as a Fayetteville girl. I never lived in the house, but I was there plenty." While spending so much time at the chapter house made for a multitude of memories, the first that comes to Paulette's mind is when she and other pledges were locked out. In response, they let the air out of the seniors' cars. "Of course we needed to get them back." In addition to all the fun times, Paulette learned lessons that would prepare her for life after graduation, such as relating to and cooperating with people. She says the leadership opportunities through the chapter also were instrumental in helping her navigate the "real world." As an alumna, Paulette has enjoyed volunteering, first as an advisor and later as a member of the house corporation, and feels strongly about helping the chapter with the reestablishment. "Anything I can do to get the chapter back, I will do it." She wants all alumnae to realize the hard work that has been put forth and the promising direction the chapter is going in. More volunteers are always needed and appreciated. "Giving of your time and of your person goes a long way. I think the benefits we can provide these young women are immeasurable." Paulette is officially retired after a long and successful career in the medical field. She was a supervising public health nurse with the Arkansas Department of Health. After completing medical school and pediatric residency, she practiced pediatrics at the Little Rock Air Force Base, then Jacksonville, Ark., and finally Hot Springs, Ark. She also became board certified in bariatrics and practiced in Hot Springs. Though retired, she still keeps up her medical license and attends medical conferences every year. She says the highlight of her career would have to be all the babies she cared for. "It's amazing seeing the mothers who are now grandmothers and getting updates on their children and grandchildren." Paulette and her husband, Robert, live in Hot Springs and have two children and five grandchildren. She enjoys sewing, cross-stitch, and cooking. Paulette can be contacted via e-mail at ps_johnson@ cablelynx.com.
