Reorganized House Corporation e House Corporation Board of Directors has been completely reor- ganized. It has acted decisively to correct long-standing problems to upgrade the livability of the chapter house. Conclusion: e board is engaged in the affairs of the corporation and will discharge its responsibilities. e directors have strengths in the areas in which the corporation has responsibilities. 9 Judicial Board Role and Responsibilities Revisited e active chapter judicial board has existed for some time. With the tighter standards and larger consequences, it will have an important role in the standards succeeding in shaping the behavior of the actives. Conclusion: We believe with the demonstrated commitment of the ac- tives, the judicial board is positioned to make the standards work and elevate the performance of the chapter. 10 Formation of the "Triumvirate" • Composition: consul, pro consul, and one Advisory Board member as chairman. • Purpose: Assure that a judicial board decision to expel a member has received due process. • Authority: To grant by unanimous vote a one-time de-ferment of consequences. It cannot overrule a judicial board decision. Conclusion: is is the idea of the active chapter. It is a positive way for the alumni to stay in touch with the judicial proceedings in the house and ensure that extreme decisions are thoroughly vetted. 11 Disciplined Alumni Oversight Alumni oversight has been an oxymoron for years. Systematic, organized alumni oversight with accountability is built into the Policy Governance System (See #14). It establishes that the Alumni Chapter is accountable to the membership for the conduct and performance of the active chapter. It exists to council, instruct, and challenge the active chapter, while keeping the responsibility for its performance and conduct clearly on its shoulders. Conclusion: is is structured to specifically to eliminate alumni neglect through the systematic oversight embedded in the Policy Governance System. 12 Alumni Chapter Organized e K-State Sigma Chi Alumni Chapter has been organized as a not- for-profit Kansas corporation. Formally organizing the Alumni Chap- ter was a decision based upon the desirability of having required ac- countability, i.e., annual meetings, elections, annual report to state, etc. Its policies are nearing completion. Already included is the provision "the Alumni Board of Directors is accountable to the Alumni Chapter members for the conduct and performance of the active chapter" Conclusion: is fills the huge void among the alumni, a strong move for accountability to the alumni members. 13 Alumni Chapter Governance System Designed and Implemented is system will produce the desired results. e Alumni Chapter has adopted and implemented a modified version of policy governance, a system designed for not-for-profit organizations. It is characterized by accountability, discipline, assigned responsibilities with timelines and processes. Conclusion: is provides the opportunity to achieve continuity and con- sistently high performance of the alumni and the active chapters. It is also where a volunteer organization can become lax, take shortcuts, and un- dermine its strength. Vigilance of all directors and alumni is a necessity. 14 Formation of Chapter Advisory Board e concept of a Chapter Advisory Board (recommended by Sigma Chi International) was adopted to assume the myriad responsibilities formerly borne alone by the chapter advisor. Conclusion: Only time will tell if this is effective. However, with the re- sponsibilities of the chapter advisor, it is an important effort. 15 House Director Hired (formerly Housemother) e chapter has been without a housemother for three years. For seven years, no housemother has resided in the house. Julie Cro has been hired as house director. She comes highly recommend by the ADPi sorority. She is living in the chapter house. Conclusion: With few alumni being unaware of the absence of a House- mother is bold evidence of the absence of alumni support. e Actives have always wanted one and were tasked with hiring a new one. Upon learning of this, the reorganized House Corporation assumed the respon- sibility and hired Julie, who had been located by the Consul. Filling this slot is pivotal to the future of the Chapter. 16 House Director (Housemother) Quarters Renovated ese quarters had been seriously neglected. Julie repainted the quar- ters and oversaw their repair. ey are now quite attractive. She reports these are spacious compared to what she had previously. Conclusion: Having a quality house director requires nice quarters. Julie was instrumental in making that happen. 17 Our Vision of Our Future (Active and Alumni Chapters) "Excellence Across the Board"
