Lafayette: Lessons In Leadership from the Idealist General will be discussed by the author, Marc Leepson at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 7, in Clark Hall, Yarborough Auditorium. Operation Homefront 5k on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 9 .m. The run will start at Reeves Auditorium Gathering Site. FTCC Student Government Association to host 9/11 Memorial Observance and FORSCOM Band Remembrance Concert Fayetteville Technical Community College's Student Government Association and Student Activities office will host two events in observance of 9/11. On Sept. 11, Brig. Gen. Ferdinand Irizarry II will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Observance at 8:30 a.m. at the Gazebo located between the Tony Rand Student Center and the Advanced Technology Center, 2201 Hull Road, Fayetteville campus. The Fayetteville Fire/ Emergency Management Department Honor Guard will serve as the Color Guard. Bagpiper Peter MacArthur will also participate in the ceremony. Bragg from Fort McPherson, Ga., and their fi rst public performance in the Fayetteville area was at FTCC in 2011. Some seating will be provided, and guests are also invited to bring a blanket to sit on the lawn while enjoying the brass ensemble. Both events are open to the public. In case of inclement weather, the events will be held at the Fayetteville campus Horace Sisk Gymnasium. Brig. Gen. Irizarry is the deputy commanding general of the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School (Airborne) based at Fort Bragg. The Army Ground Forces Band provides world-class music in support of the U.S. Army Forces Command headquartered at Fort Bragg. It serves as the musical ambassador of the American combat soldier to the American people, instilling pride in our troops and promoting a spirit of patriotism and support for our nation's military through the performance of music (www.forscom.army.mil/band). At 12 noon on Sept. 11, the FORSCOM Army Ground Forces Band, under the direction of Capt. Daniel F. Toven, will perform at the shaded lawn area immediately in front of the Tony Rand Student Center. The FORSCOM Army Ground Forces Band relocated to Fort Brig. Gen. Irizarry Book Discussion Series on Mystery and Crime Begins In September Explore modern crime as a dilemma in our own community as Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center kicks off the book discussion series: Let's Talk About It: Mysteries — Clues to Who We Are on Sept. 20, at 6:30 p.m., Headquarters Library, 300 Maiden Lane. The novels are concerned with not only the crime that impacts the communities in which they occur, but also how the communities mold and shape those crimes. The discussion series, which is facilitated by local scholars, encourages us to discover clues to our own identities through thoughtful dialogue focused on the following books: Dance Hall of the Dead by Tony Hillerman Burn Marks by Sara Paretsky Devil in a Blue Dress by Walter Mosley Time's Witness by Michael Malone The Last Child by John Hart Copies are available for participants to check out and discussions are free and open to the public.
