DTD 2 The CordelT W hen looking at colleges, Shaliya Dehipawala '14 found the perfect match at Cornell University. "I was attracted to Cornell's any person...any study motto. I have a diverse set of intellectual interests and I wanted an opportunity to explore them. I also wanted to attend a school with an active Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. Not only is Cornell's active, it also has a tremendous legacy of producing exceptional leaders." Similarly, joining Delta Tau Delta was an ideal match for Shaliya. "The lessons I learned in the Beta Omicron Chapter were just as valuable as those I learned in the classroom at Cornell. The fraternity taught me how to build consensus for an idea, embrace diversity, lead by example, and overcome adversity." Shaliya did not shy away from leadership opportunities as an undergraduate, serving in the roles of assistant new member educator, road chairman, new member educator, and secretary. "The fraternity forced me to learn how to lead a diverse team. We came from all over the world, studied a broad variety of subjects, and had our own motivations for coming to Cornell and reasons for joining the fraternity. Turning a group of individuals into a cohesive team prepared me well for what I hope to be a long career as a leader." His leadership skills followed Shaliya to his military career as an active duty Army officer currently based out of Fort Bragg, N.C. "It is an absolute pleasure to lead American paratroopers and jumping out of a flying airplane is an exhilarating experience. I've trained all over the country from the Atlantic Coast to the Mojave Desert." Shaliya keeps in touch with several of his fraternity brothers through social media and attends the Frozen Apple Hockey game every year in Madison Square Garden. "Many thanks to Jason Saltsberg '94, who organizes a block of tickets for the fraternity. It is a great opportunity to catch up with alumni of all ages. I also had the tremendous pleasure of attending Homecoming last year and got to meet several of our current active members." Staying connected to Beta Omicron is important to Shaliya. "Like most things in life, what you get from the fraternity is what you put into it. The more I've given to the Beta Omicron, the more honored I am to be a member." In his spare time, Shaliya enjoys reading, running, and traveling to New York. He ran his first marathon in March. You can reach Shaliya at shaliyadehipawala@gmail.com. ank You, Loyal Alumni, for Your Generous Support T hrough the generosity of the donors listed below, we've raised $29,667 since last fall.
