W hen her daughter was going through recruitment, Jo Hanna Westerfield Worden '84 promised her she would not pressure her to join Alpha Beta. On Bid Day, Jo Hanna stood at the top of the steps at Greek Theater wearing a pink Phi Mu shirt, shaking with excitement. When ashley Worden '15 made her way up the steps, Jo Hanna was the first person she saw. Embracing the moment, Ashley's eyes filled with tears as she hugged her mom and accepted her lavaliere. "I was so excited. I had no idea that I would feel that way," Jo Hanna said. "I also had no idea how proud Ashley would be to be a legacy. It is a true honor for both of us." When asked why they joined Phi Mu, the mother-daughter pair could be confused as twins. For Jo Hanna, "Joining Phi Mu was the easiest decision I ever made. I knew I had found my home. It was the place where I could relax and be myself." And as for Ashley, "When I went into the Phi Mu house, I immediately felt comfortable with every girl I talked to. I called my mom that night and told her that I had no idea where the week would take me, but in my heart, I knew that I had found my home away from home." As a member of the executive committee, Jo Hanna was easily motivated to contribute to the Alpha Beta capital campaign. "The Chapter House will be on campus not only for my lifetime, but for generations to come," she said. "It was important to me to have my name and my daughter's name on the plaque so that my granddaughters, their daughters, and their daughters can walk into the Chapter House and see how important the building of this home was to Ashley and me.
