LifeLong MeMories in DG inspire Karen WheeLer sMith '67 to pay it forWard K aren Wheeler Smith '67 always knew she'd love to be part of a sorority. Coming from a family who were members of the Greek community at Ohio State, Karen knew she wanted to have the same memorable experiences in a place she could call her home away from home. When she went through "rush," it became evident that Delta Gamma was that place for her. "The most important thing was that I liked the people I met in Epsilon Chapter and I felt at home. And, of course, I had no doubt that the DGs were the best!" Being a "town girl," the DG house was the on-campus place where Karen could go after a long day of classes to study or socialize with her sisters. Some of the priceless memories that have stayed with Karen for nearly 50 years include Ohio State football games with DGs who always had a block of seats, dinners at the house, fraternity and sorority social events, and bed races around the oval. However, one of Karen's most cherished moments in DG was during her sophomore year, when Karen Valtman Green '67 introduced her to her future husband, Doug, who was finishing his master's degree at OSU. "We were pinned that spring—Doug graduated that summer and we married in the fall, what would have been the beginning of my junior year," she says. These memories are one of the many reasons why Karen stays connected with Epsilon, and she is dedicated to supporting Epsilon's capital campaign to ensure future DGs will have the opportunity to make lifelong memories with sisters as well. Karen has always been proud of the DG house at Ohio State, and when she read about the renovation project and additions to the chapter house in the Always Anchored newsletter, she was thrilled. Karen saw the Anchoring a New Future for Epsilon campaign as a way to pay it forward and to say thank you for the lifelong friendships, experiences, and memories she gained as an undergraduate. "One of the things we knew as sisters was the importance of being there for one another. Contributing to the capital campaign is a way to honor what Delta Gamma was for us when we were there and to support the chapter continuing to be that for future undergraduates." For many sisters, including Karen, the opportunity to build new and lasting friendships is a tradition that has served as the core of Epsilon's success for years, and through the campaign efforts, Karen is confident that this tradition will continue for many more years to come. Karen fully retired in June 2011, and she and Doug now enjoy sailing the Chesapeake Bay on their Tartan 3700, spending lots of time with their four grandchildren, and being actively engaged in a variety of community roles. Karen is former president of Anne Arundel Women Giving Together, a giving circle of 200-plus women who, through collective philanthropy, invest $100,000 each year in Annapolis nonprofits. She also chairs the Annapolis Symphony Board of Trustees and in December 2016, was pleased to receive the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County's 2016 Volunteer of the Year Award. Though Karen and Doug have relocated around the country, living in Beaumont, Texas; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Inverness, Illinois; Sudbury, Massachusetts; and Annapolis, Maryland, Karen has maintained close connections with many of her sisters, primarily through birthday and Christmas letters, and has attended a few alumnae reunions. Just recently, Karen received a certificate from Delta Gamma honoring her 50-year membership in Epsilon. Karen and Doug visit Columbus often, where her mother lives at First Community Village, and take in the occasional OSU football game and trip to the campus. "It's very exciting to see Epsilon thriving and to support the renovation work at the house!" she says. Doug and Karen have two sons, Brian and Colby, both of whom are attorneys.
