Red Bluff visits Anderson in Week 2. Mercy rolls past Hayfork 47-24 By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor touchdowns on 166 yards rushing, Tommy Garcia passed to Nick Feser for a 26- yard touchdown completion and the Mercy Warriors beat Hayfork 47-24 on Friday at Sacred Heart Parish School. The Warriors improve to 1- 1 after forfeiting its game game against Dunsmuir last week because of injuries. Mercy lost its last three meetings against Hayfork, only scoring six against the team in the last three years before its first game on the field this season. But that's history. "The team worked really hard throughout every prac- tice," Rosales said after the game. "The coach worked very hard, both coaches worked very hard and this is the outcome. A 'W'." Rosales' brother, Jose, also had a big game. He rushed for 88 yards and scored two touchdowns. Mercy, which was 1-8 last Juan Rosales scored two year, is headed by first-year head coach Charlie Ford. "It's a good way for the boys to start out," said 28-year- 1994. The Timberjacks don't have a senior on its roster. "We're kind of starting at the bottom and working our way back up," said Harrison, adding that his team had trou- ble "wrapping up and finish- ing plays because they just were big, strong kids." Mercy shined on defense as well. With 5:29 to play in the second quarter, Feser tapped an attempted lateral play away on Hayfork's 20-yard line, recoverd the ball and ran it in for a touchdown to give Mercy a 27-6 lead. Ford's team lost 6-7 that day. The nailbiting wasn't as bad Friday. On Mercy's first possession, less than two min- utes into the game, junior quarterback Garcia threw a touchdown pass to Feser. And after Hayfork turned the ball over on downs on its next pos- session, the Warriors marched down the field from the Tim- berjack's 48-yard line and Garcia ran for a four-yard touchdown. Hayfork did counter on its next possession with a 14-yard touchdown run from fresh- man running back Brandon Klopfer to make it 14-6, but that's as close as the Timber- jacks would make it on the day. Hayfork is in a rebuilding mode, said Harrison, who has been coaching varsity since play, with the Timberjacks threatening to score on Mercy's 6-yard line, Warriors freshman defensive tackle Bryce Baer recovered a sec- ond-down fumble with about 4:20 to play in the third. And in the second quarter, safety Jose Alvarez blocked a punt attempt. On another big defensive Alejandro Guerrero had 15 solo tackles, and three assisted. Juan Rosales had eight solo tackles and three assisted. Juan Rosales said now the team will focus on each game it has left, with a playoff goal in mind.
