Saturday, March 20, 2010 – Daily News – 5A Religion Faith&Worship Church news Latino Ministries head to visit The community is invited to hear guest preacher Pastora Tina Torres speak about her passion for Jesus, for Spanish and for the Latino and cross-cultural min- istry at 11 a.m. Sunday, March 21 at the Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff. Torres envisions herself and her ministry as a bridge enabling people from differing cultural backgrounds to appreciate and enjoy one other, as well as work togeth- er for the kingdom of God. Torres graduated with a Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary, concentrating on courses related to Latino and multicultural ministry. As the director of Latino Ministries, she is charged with developing a strategy for Latino outreach in the Sacramento Presbytery, while also working as the part- time associate pastor in Latino Outreach at Trinity Presbyterian Church in West Sacramento. The Presbyterian Church is at 838 Jefferson St.on the corner of Jefferson and Hickory. For more informa- tion, call the church office at 527-0372. Easter sunrise service Sunrise Bible Fellowship will be gathering for its signature Sunrise Service at 6:30 a.m. Easter Sunday, April 4. The church has been meeting at the same Plymire Road location every Easter morning for more than 20 years. From Baker Road, follow the signs to Plymire Road, past the city landfill. There will be volunteers directing drivers to parking. Bring a lawn chair and a warm coat or blanket, and be prepared to be awed by a beautiful sunrise behind an old rugged cross on a wildflower-strewn hill. Friends old and new are invited for an annual return to the cross for singing hymns and healing a message. Everyone is welcome to come to the church, 956 Jackson St., at 8 a.m. for a pancake breakfast to raise money for the church's India mission team. Regular Sunday morning worship services will be an hour early at 10 a.m. to allow families to be get home earlier for Easter celebrations. SOMETIMES BETTER TO BACK OFF The Rev. Duke Tufty, Unity Tem- ple on the Plaza: Most of us have inter- vened in another's life by sharing an opinion that is contrary to their think- ing. Our intentions are good. We think we can help them live a better life; we think we "know" how they should be living their lives. When my son graduated from col- lege, he made the decision to take a year off and travel the world. This time would not only diminish his savings but would also take him out of the job market for a year. I strongly intervened and tried to impress on him the impracticality of such a move. My thinking was "old school." Get a job, I have finally come to the posi- tion that the church is an official subculture in the United States. No longer does the church hold the honor and respect of the majority of our citizens. No longer is the church living in separation from the world. The church, the Body of Christ, is not sick, not wounded, not hindered, not separated, not special, not anything to the world in general. You might be wonder- ing where I came up with this seemingly cynical view. It hap- pened at Happy Holidays. That’s right – not Merry Christmas, not even X-Mas — Happy Holidays. This is when it was finally con- firmed in me that the church is no longer a force in America for all the good and bad connotations that includes. What settled in my mind and spirit is that the time is now here where the Church can and must once again declare our distinc- tives. We are a separated people who through the reality of our times have been included. We live in an anything goes world. If you want to be a religious person there is no harm in that. If you want to be a whatever, who really cares, as long as it doesn’t affect them too much. All this has gotten me thinking that I can once again proclaim the Gospel like they did in the New Testament – its all new again – most people haven’t heard it. I’m excited for Christmas, the celebra- tion of the Birth of Christ, next year as I seek to have a full scale living nativity scene in progress. I believe the best thing that could happen to hold on to it, establish security and retire out of it. He traveled for a year and gained knowledge and experience he could not have gotten any other way. Ten years later, it is clear he did exactly the right thing for him at the time. To intervene or not intervene, that is the question. If the opinions you share and statements you make are over- whelmingly agreed on by the vast majority as "truth," it is good to relate that information in a kind and peaceful way without expectation that the other person will adopt your viewpoint. EACH CASE IS DIFFERENT The Rev. Pat Rush, pastor, Visita- tion Catholic Church: Well, I suppose that depends. If she is so off base that The battle the church is that it becomes the subculture that it is fully and with- out reserve. You see, if the church stands separated, as it was meant to, it can shine in the darkness and through the power of Christ in a world that is in darkness and be a bright beacon on a hill a shining light to a lost and dying world. Social programs are great, we support them, but the church is not a social program. The church tri- umphant is a spiritual pro- gram and we must take that Spirit and place it once again before our communi- ties. I am in no way advo- cating some kind of protest group, society or clique that will place itself above or out- side of humanity. What I see is that the church goes back to what it was intended to do — share the Good News of Jesus Christ and His mes- sage of salvation to a lost and dying world. When everything else is done, when we meet our Savior in the air, the things that will stand will be the message of God’s love to a dying world, not our programs, special events, good works, or any- thing else. To this end, I have personally Dan Steigman GodTalk year. I abhorred no Christmas music, secular or otherwise in many stores. I even missed good Old Saint Nick as the jolly old elf. Now St. Nick is a messed up mortal who doesn’t want the job, male or female, from a broken family, with nothing but failure on his or her hands. We own a store. We didn’t do much either. We couldn’t afford to. I also didn’t realize just how much I was missing until it was too late - not again. It is up to us to bring beauty and joy back into Christmas and into our faith. It is up to me. taken up the mantle of proclaiming the Word of God, training up others to share the love of Christ with those around them, living in but not as the world, showing through my witness that what we say about Christ matters and we’ll prove it by our love. I hated Happy Holidays this Should I intervene if a friend is way off base in her beliefs? she is planning a terrorist attack or other violent or destructive act, you should turn her in to the Department of Homeland Security immediately. On the other hand, if your idea of intervention resembles strategies from the Inquisition, you might want to turn yourself in to the authorities. The Second Vatican Council in its Declaration on Religious Freedom taught that, premised on the dignity of the person and the respect due to the conscience of each individual, every person has a right to religious freedom, and every person should be immune from coercion by any and all other individuals, groups and powers. Some limits to this freedom I have spelled out above. I can’t see the future but I can see that if the Church does not stand up, stand apart and renewed from the world, Satan will have won the battle against us without firing a shot. He will have won through our complacency and willingness to be counted and look like everyone else — our wanting to hide in plain sight. 2010 is a new age in my mind. It is either the age of the rekindling of the church or the age of its demise. It will be most interesting to see if we stand or bury our heads but the time has come that we make a choice to do one or the other. The Rev. Dan Steigman is the senior pastor of Believers' Church in Corning. He has been a faithful pastor in Tehama County for many years.
