Quartzsite, AZ was named a 2016 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its com- mitment to effective urban forest management. Quartzsite achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the pro- gram's four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day obser- vance and proclamation. "Tree City USA communities can see the impact an urban forest has in a community fi rst hand," said Dan Lambe, President of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Additionally, recogni- tion brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it's through volunteer en- gagement or public education." Trees provide multiple benefi ts to a community when properly planted and maintained. They help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants and provide wildlife habitat, among many other benefi ts. The Arbor Day Foundation is a million member nonprofi t conser- vation and education organization with the mission to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. More information is available at arborday.org. Quartzsite named Tree City USA The Arizona Department of Trans- portation and the Federal Highway Administration have identifi ed the need to make spot improvements at the Interstate 10/Quartzsite Boulevard interchange (Exit 17) in Quartzsite, approximately 22 miles east of the Arizona / Cali- fornia state line. The project will improve intersection operations at the onand off ramps. The $2.2 mil- lion project is scheduled to begin in spring 2017, with estimated completion in fall 2017. Work consists of widening the ex- isting cross road, extending drain- age pipes, installing bridge barrier and lane striping. Drivers should expect lane and shoulder closures on Quartzsite Boulevard; lane closures on In- terstate 10 during bridge-rail demolition; and ramp closures during paving operations. ADOT will maintain access to businesses during construction. Use the East Quartzsite traffi c interchange at Exit 19 (milepost 19.5) as an alter- nate route while work is under- way. Plan for construction-related delays and proceed with caution through the active work zone.
