Tau Talk alpha tau omega at iowa state university spring 2017 Building Men of True Merit Scholarship Fund Program Seeks to Build on Its Strong History i n the first couple years after opening the new chapter house in 1991, the board recognized a serious cash flow problem. Unable to service our debt due to the size of the mortgage we had to take on to finish the house we were headed to bankruptcy. The Board turned to our stalwart backers within the alumni ranks Bill Gardiner '54, Karl Kullander '54 and Dale Weber '28, to help find a solution. Dale had been instrumental in securing over $1 million in cash and pledges to rebuild the house, and Bill had helped the chapter financially in the past. However, in 1991, Bill was unwilling to work on a plan that was shortsighted. He suggested we turn our sights to a larger plan that would focus on sustaining the chapter into the future through improved long-term cash flow. From these discussions evolved a fund drive campaign that would raise some short-term money to reduce the mortgage and refinance it at more reasonable rates we could manage and establish a scholarship endowment. This scholarship endowment was envisioned to produce several key results: 1. Provide scholarships to all members who achieve excellence in the ATW tradition. 2. Improve our attractiveness to incoming members with character, integrity, and capacity; and 3. With the stream of young men and the scholarship funds, we would help ensure adequate cash flow to sustain the chapter financially. To date, we've been building our brotherhood on the recognition of True Merit and academic performance with our existing scholarship funds. The Board has been granting scholarships to deserving young men since 1998, with Robert "R.J." Paulik '97 receiving our first scholarship. Many of our brothers have helped us in our pursuit of this mission. Due to the size of their individual gifts a number of those alumni are identified by the named scholarships listed in the following article and over 100 others are recognized by our roster of contributors located in the front hall of the chapter house.
