There is another tree planting program in which anyone can partici- pate at any time—the Penny Pines Reforesta- tion Program. Penny Pines is a USDA, Forest Service program established in 1941 by the San Francis- co Sports Association. These people recognized the need to restore our forest devastated by fire, disease and insects. The very first donations went to our local Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Since then service groups such as the Red Bluff Garden Club donate "pennies" to help restore devastated areas of Cali- Dear Annie: I am a suc- cessful and happily married 28-year-old woman. I have a good life, for which I am grateful, except for one thing. When I was 15, a close family friend 15 years my senior was staying with my family. I considered ‘‘Shawn’’ to be like a broth- er. But one night, while my father was watching TV upstairs and my mom and older brother were out of town, he came into my bedroom and tried to force himself on me. Fortu- nately, when I begged him to stop, he did. He left the room, and I called my brother, crying. When confronted, Shawn admit- ted it and said he had asked forgive- ness from God. Nothing else hap- pened to him. It takes only a $68 donation to purchase enough trees (currently around 350 seedlings) to replant burnt or disease and insect damaged forests on a little less than one acre in conjunction with federal "plantations". To support the program Red Bluff Garden Club collects monies at our monthly meetings and holds an annual Yard Sale at the Union Hall on Baker Road. This year our Yard Sale is scheduled for May 21 and 22. Why 68 dollars? At the start of the program in 1941, seedlings could be produced for about one cent each. Approximate- ly 680 seedlings were used to plant an acre. For $68.00 seedlings for ten acres could be purchased. Site preparation and planting costs were met through regular Forest Service appropriations. The program was an overwhelming success; donations for seedling poured in and far exceed appropriated funds avail- able for the actual planti- ng. In 1964 the agreement was rewritten to provide that funds contributed under the Penny Pines program be used for the entire planting and post- ing process, rather than solely for purchasing seedlings. Individual donations sister-in-law went to Shawn’s for dinner last week. Annie, how can I make it clear to my father how much this hurts me? He always says, ‘‘The past is the past,’’ but I can’t heal completely because I don’t feel I was protected after this happened — or now. Can I file charges against Shawn 13 years later? — Betrayed in Mis- souri Shortly after the incident, I became sexually active, then promis- cuous, and eventually started using drugs. I know now that a lot of my behavior stemmed from this inci- dent. When I was 19, I moved 1,500 miles away and straightened out my life. Today, I am once again close to my parents and brother. The problem is, many of my fam- ily members still associate with Shawn. Last spring, my father took him on an all-expenses-paid hunting trip. I told my mom how betrayed I felt. She agreed with me and said she’d talk to my father. But I just found out that my dad, brother and Scholarships • Soroptimist International of Red Bluff is seeking applicants for the Darliene Lundberg Memorial Schol- arship.Lundberg was a past president of Soroptimist International of Red Bluff. Hiller, of Cottonwood, has sold his ranch to Herbert F. Hiller, of Sacramen- to. This tract of land consists of several hun- dred acres of fine stock range which will be stocked with sheep and also a number of acres of fine alfalfa land. – Daily News, March 18, 1910 Dear Betrayed: In Mis- souri, there is a 10-year statute of limitations for unlawful sexual offenses involving a person under age 17. Your father and sib- lings seem to be in denial about Shawn’s character and are amazing- ly unsupportive of you. You may not be able to get through to Dad if he doesn’t want to face up to what hap- pened. But it might help to discuss it with your clergyperson or doctor, or with a therapist who can also inter- cede with your family. Dear Annie: I was with my boyfriend for a while and became pregnant. Unfortunately, I had a mis- carriage. I had a hard time getting over the loss, and he promised to be there for me to the end. However, he has since informed me that he was sleeping with another woman during and after the pregnancy. We broke up, and I am slowly try- ing to get over everything. To say I am hurt is an understatement. How do I begin to forgive when I can be made and a planta- tion or plantations will be planted as a memorial for a deceased loved-one or to honor a living person. The Garden Club’s Penny Pines Chairman sends donations directly to the Penny Pines Coordinator at the Shasta-T headquar- ters in Redding. Donors receive a certificate and a plantation location map back from the National Forest and a sign is posted in the Forest announcing the plantation and the name/s of the donors. If you would like to make a donation to honor a deceased loved-one or honor a living person, send your $68 check (or multiples, as you choose), made out to Red Bluff Garden Club, to P.O. How do I forget the betrayal? — Depressed in Seattle Dear Seattle: You are suffering from two major losses. And keep in mind, pregnancy causes changes in your hormonal levels, which may still be affecting your mood, making everything more difficult. It’s no wonder you are depressed. Talk to your gynecologist about some short-term counseling, and contact Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support, Inc. (nationalshare.org) at 1-800-821-6819. Dear Annie: I read the letter from ‘‘Tennessee,’’ who doesn’t believe his daughter is his biological child because she doesn’t look like anyone in their family. As our son grew up, he didn’t resemble anyone in our family. At some point, we were given a family Bible. While looking through it, a photo fell out. The person looked exactly like our son, right down to the mustache and beard. The picture was of his great-great-great-grandfather. I hope reading this will give the man some peace. — Canada Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.
