W hen Kurt Goeser '93 arrived at the University of Kansas from his hometown in Omaha, Nebraska, he decided to go through recruitment as a way to meet people. As a first- generation college student, there wasn't a history of fraternity involvement in his family, but he immediately felt at home at the FIJI Chapter House. This turned out to be one of the best decisions Kurt made as an Undergraduate. "I would not have graduated from KU without the FIJI experience," he shared. Specifically, as Kurt was paying for his own education, the Fraternity helped him find a part-time job. "I got a job working in the Chi Omega chapter house, where I started out as a dish boy, and then became a waiter, and then a head waiter. I was able to take my meals there, and that helped make my living expenses more affordable," he said. As Kurt progressed through his Undergraduate experience, he was offered additional scholarships through his leadership in the Chapter. "There was an alumnus who was known as 'the anonymous FIJI,' and he would give scholarship money to Brothers in need who were serving in leadership positions in the Chapter," Kurt recalled. This kind of involvement from the Graduate brothers bolstered both individual Brothers and the Chapter as a whole. Additionally, there were other Brothers in the business and accounting program and they were an inspiration to Kurt, offering valuable advice. Thanks in part to the support he found in the FIJI house, Kurt graduated from KU with business and accounting degrees. These formative experiences were what inspired Kurt to donate to the Mighty Proud campaign. "My family, and the life I've been able to provide for them, all started with the good foundation in my life that the Fraternity helped me set. Where I am now started with the FIJI House." But more than that, Kurt realized how important Graduate Brother involvement is to the overall success of the Chapter. "Just as I needed the support of our Graduate Brothers when I was an Undergraduate Brother, so too do they need our support in a changing world." Kurt and his wife, Julee, live in Lawrence, Kansas, with their three daughters, Morgan, Madison, and Olivia, where he owns and operates a State Farm Insurance agency. He remains close friends with several of his pledge Brothers, including Chris Vine '93, Jeremy Haas '93, and Rick Boyd '93. In his spare time, Kurt likes to spend time with his family, travel, and support KU athletics. You can connect with Kurt at kurt.goeser.jytk@statefarm.com.
