S
teve visited the Chapter House on February
16 and had very positive things to say about
the house and the men who occupy it.
"I was in Lawrence today with a pledge brother,
John Martin '59, who is an artist. Among his
many paintings are included pictures of the old
house and the one before it, along with a portrait
of Dean Smith '53 and the first pledge, Billy
Morgan 1885. When we came in the house we
were met by at least seven Phi Gams, presumably
freshmen, as well as the rush chairman. They all
introduced themselves, looked us in the eye and
welcomed us to the house and exuded hospitality.
The first floor was neat and tidy and clean. We
didn't go upstairs as we had an appointment
elsewhere. I asked the rush chairman about
scholarship and he said it was in the range of
3.15, ranking sixth among fraternities. He said
they had 80 actives and pledges living in the
house and 20+ living outside.
My impression was very favorable, the best
made on me in the 30 years I have been going
over there since we returned to Kansas City. It
really looks like they are on the right track."
