n February 10, 1889, nine women were initiated into Alpha Phi
at the Ithaca Hotel, creating the fourth sorority at Sage College.
Since then, Alpha Phi has been an active member of Cornell University
Greek life. With more than 2,500 initiates, Delta Chapter has nurtured
and sustained women during some of the most formative years of their
lives, cultivating lasting friendships in the process. As alumnae, we
can trace many of our best college memories back to our Alpha Phi
experience.
While there may be some differences in today's chapter compared to
the one you knew, there is a bond among Delta members at Cornell. As
shared at the 2013 Delta Scholarship Brunch, "Scholarship, education,
and academic achievement are all part and parcel of the larger sphere of
our experience here at Cornell University." And in Alpha Phi Fraternity,
we have always nurtured the goal of understanding and growth. More
than ever, sororities play a significant role in the development of young
women, and this growth is crucial in today's competitive world. In
addition to the standards taught by our sisterhood, we acquired valuable
assets that allow us to model personal excellence in our communities
and our professions, giving us the opportunity to effect real change.
Our chapter house at 411 Thurston Avenue in Ithaca has been the focus
of undergraduate life for Delta Chapter for nearly 100 years. It has been
a home away from home for our members and a classroom where our
sisters have aspired to lead and achieve. However, if we wish for Alpha
Phi to continue its strong tradition at Cornell, we must ensure that we
are providing a safe, modern, and competitive facility for the next 100
years. Now is the appropriate time to secure our future.
