St. Patrick's Day dinner is traditionally corned beef and cabbage. This recipe is from Tehama County Farm Bureau News. 2 to 2 pound corned beef brisket. 1 teaspoon whole black pepper 2 bay leaves 3 medium carrots, quar- tered lengthwise 2 medium parsnips or 1 medium rutabaga, peeled and cut into chunks 2 medium red onions, cut into wedges 10-12 new potatoes (1 pound) 1 small cabbage, cut into 6 wedges (1 pound) Trim fat from meat. Place in a 4 to 6 quart pot; add juices and spices from package of beef. Add enough water to cover meat. Add pepper and bay leaves. Bring to boiling, reduce heat. Simmer, cov- ered, about 2 hours until meat is almost tender. Add carrots, parsnips or rutabaga, and onions to meat. Return to boiling; re- duce heat. Simmer, covered, for 10 minutes. Scrub pota- toes; halve or quarter. Add potatoes and cabbage to pot. Cover and cook about 20 minutes more or until veg- etables and meat are ten- der. Discard bay leaves. Remove meat from pot. Thinly slice meat across the grain. Transfer meat and vegetables to a serv- ing platter. Makes 6 servings CATTLEWOMEN'SCORNER The Woman's Improve- ment club held its regular monthly meeting Wednes- day afternoon in the city hall. A large number of member attended. The committee in charge of the food sale reported that the sum of $52.40 was netted from the sale. The committee in charge of planting trees on the highway from Reeds Creek to the subway on the S. P. railroad reported that in connection with the civic committee of the chamber of commerce that all arrangements had been made for the purchase of black walnut trees to be planted on this road. Ninety-four trees had been contracted for and it was decided to plant them in next Wednesday. Arrange- ments are under way to make this day a holiday the matter being in the hands of Andrew Schafer of the merchants association. —March15,1917 100 YEARS AGO... Arrests KanoaSlyStutesman: 20,ofCottonwoodwas arrested Monday in the area of 99W and South Avenue and booked into Tehama County Jail on felony charges of battery on person, possession or purchase of for sale of narcotic controlled substance and proba- tion revoked. Bail was $150,000. Jacob Earl Bumpus: 29, of Red Bluff was ar- rested Monday in the area of Walnut and Lincoln streets and booked into jail on the charge of bat- tery on person. Stephen Salvadore Gior- dano: 29, of Cottonwood was arrested Monday in the area of Covington Mill at Riverview Lake and booked into jail on the charge of trespassing, refusing to leave property. Burglary North Street: A bedroom window was broken at a Corning residence. A second window was found broken at a neighboring apartment. Both panes were in the first windows facing the street. Runaway South Main Street: A 15-year-old girl was reported as a runaway Monday afternoon after she left her residence following an argument with her mother. While contact was made with the girl by phone she had not returned home as of Tuesday afternoon. Suspicious Edith Avenue: A man was given a trespass admon- ishment after being found going through a dumpster at the Spring Mountain Apartments. Third Street: A woman reported she passed a ve- hicle on 99E that followed her to the area of Mary and Carona where she confronted the driver, who then struck her window. Countryside Drive: A Red Bluff resident reported a man who was trying to sell cleaning products door to door about 3:15 p.m. Monday as suspicious. A man of similar description was reported about 9 p.m. Monday on Sparrow Court, last seen headed toward Oriole. Mary Lane, cross of belle Mill Road: A person in a vehicle and a man on a bicycle were reportedly driving around the area about 11:30 a.m. Monday and appeared to be look- ing for items to steal. Executive Drive: A man went to check on a vacant Corning residence he rents and found someone had broken into the residence and been sleeping there. He reported when he opened the door two dogs came after him. Kindlespire Road: A Proberta resident reported someone came into her house about 8:20p.m. Monday, but left when confronted by her husband. Thefts Luther Road: A man reported his headlight was stolen from his vehicle while he was at Walmart. Cody Drive: A man re- ported the theft of his headlight. Solano Street: A vehicle was broken into and a stereo and one license plate stolen at the Super Shopper in Corning. Fourth Street: Red Door Salon in Corning reported the theft of $150 in jeans.
