Psi Chapter: Honoring Our Past, Building Our Future Psi Chapter of Sigma Chi at the University of Virginia • Spring 2017 CHaPter HOuse additiOn nearly COmPlete; CaPital CamPaign COntinues P hase One of the expansion and renovation of Psi's Chapter House is nearly complete. The two-story 3,000 square foot addition includes a large multipurpose social space on the lower level which opens to a new outdoor terrace for entertaining. The first floor of the addition features a large Chapter Room and adjacent patio for receptions. Since the fall edition of this newsletter, new bathroom facilities have been completed, walls have gone up, a roof has been installed (complete with cupola), and electrical, heating, air conditioning, and plumbing systems have been installed. The construction team, led by Bret Holden '83, pushed to get the side patio, rear terrace, and sidewalks poured before cold weather arrived. Inside, carpenters framed walls, built stairways, insulated walls, and installed new drywall and flooring. A paved driveway and landscaping will follow as the project moves to completion later this spring. Mike Christian '77 continues to provide essential building materials through his company, Massey Builders Supply Corporation, in Richmond, Virginia. Most recently, all of the windows and doors Mike provided have been installed, giving the new addition a finished look. With the brick masonry complete, it is apparent that the design standards, set by the House Corporation Board of Directors, have produced a handsome and architecturally correct addition that complements the fine design of the nearly 100-year-old Chapter House at 608 Preston Place. The House Corporation Building Committee, consisting of Don Sours '58, Steve Herbert '68, Dick Dyas '67, Jeff Stith '81, Tom Washburn '70, and Michael Guthrie '75, meet monthly to review progress with Bret Holden '83 and his team and to coordinate activities to support the construction efforts. Under the Committee's guidance, a variety of successful Homecoming weekend events were held (see article on page 5), while plans are in the works for a formal dedication of the new Chapter Room on Friday, April 28, 2017, at 5 p.m. The room will be dedicated in memory of Rick Donlan '68 and Glenn Kirwin '83. The families and Psi Brothers have worked tirelessly to raise funds to support this project. Also in the works is an effort by Psi Brothers to raise sufficient funds to dedicate the new side patio in memory of Jim Evans '77. The finish line for Phase One is in sight. Phase Two, the total renovation of the existing Chapter House, will commence after the House Corporation Board of Directors is satisfied that sufficient funds have been raised to cover its cost. Our Capital Campaign Committee believes we have the ability to raise the additional $500,000 needed to meet our campaign goal of $2,000,000. To get there, we need the help of Psi Brothers across all classes to improve our participation rate, which stands today at approximately 20%. That means 221 Brothers have contributed, and nearly 800 Brothers have yet to do so. Please note the distribution of contributions by class included in this newsletter. There are a number of classes that have gone "above and beyond" in fundraising, and we are truly grateful for their efforts and leadership. Classes not listed have not yet participated. If you are a member of a class with limited participation, we hope to hear from you. We would also like to hear from you if you know members of those classes who were leaders or who could now support this campaign (please e-mail Steve Herbert or Bret Holden at the e-mail addresses listed below). A pledge of $500 per year for five years will get your name on the donor wall in the new Chapter Room, honoring all who have participated in the campaign at the $2,500 level or above. A pledge form is enclosed for your convenience. To all 221 of our Brothers who have made contributions to the campaign, we say thank you! As you can see from the photos in this newsletter, your support for the Sigma Chi fraternity at the University of Virginia is making this project a reality. We invite all Brothers to participate in the Capital Campaign and to join us for the dedication event on April 28, 2017.
