You would think that by this time in life, with studying all things human potential, changing many aspects about my behavior and hav- ing a multitude of powerfully great things happen in my life that I would somehow be bathed in all things positive, that I would be impervious to negative energy and that I would simply turn and offer my other cheek when slapped by life's cruelties. The fact is, random and unwanted stuff falls into my lap regularly. I commonly need to take deep breaths and bite my tongue. I oftentimes feel over- whelmed and old ways of thinking creep into my head. Bad, negative, weird, unsettling, tough, unexpect- ed, unwarranted and unwanted stuff happens to everyone. I am part of a blended family. That alone is something that strikes fear into anyone who has tried to patch together a quilt made up of squares with children from other marriages, ex-spouses from other marriages and heavy baggage from other marriages. To say the least, it is a challenge to try to put together two families and truly not have lines of demarcation when it comes to all things previous to your new union. At the top of the list is the delicate balance of par- enting your child versus someone else's child that you live with, but don't have full access to discipline or influence the way you do your own child. It's as if there are two sets of rules in the house- I parent mine my way, you parent yours Forced family fun Nothing puts a strain on a second or third or more marriage than chil- dren. The quickest way to crack the foundation of a couple is through the perceived dissing of the child. At some point, the step parent is going to say, do or act in a way that sets the child off or sets the parent off and the person who is most affected is the bio par- ent. The bio parent is now in the dilemma of who to support and who to challenge. Sometimes it is obvi- ous who is making matters far worse than need be and sometimes the child and the spouse simply want to be the one you are loyal to which means often times there has to be a winner and loser in the dynamic. Have you had to face your child and tell them that you support your spouse and the child needs to understand? Likewise, have you had to face your spouse and expect them to have the matu- rity to weather the angst of a child of divorce? It can be a grueling and heart tearing experience. your way and neither of us parents the others without permission. Ughhhhh. I understand the collateral pain associated with blending families. My family faced a test of epic proportions while on a family vacation. To put it mildly, high humidity, unmet expectations, Faydra Rector You Matter family, we were able to overcome a disaster and move on a bit closer than before. The lesson learned, our family is too old and too blend- ed for 'forced family fun' as they like to call it. Blending families successfully is an art. I am not an artist. I am a mom. I am a wife. I am a step- mother and I am doing the best I can to stay in each role. competing agenda's and jet lag are a horrible mix for four type A people trying to cram in as much as they can into a week's vacation. My hus- band and my daughter had a fight that spewed more venom than the Exxon Valdez and I was caught smack in the mid- dle. It was a power strug- gle between two people I love and I was facing a Sophie's sort of choice. Ultimately, I had to pull all of my tricks out of my hat and through talking it out, making amends and each person owning their role in creating world war Faydra Rector, MA is a mental health administrator, author, public speaker, educator and life coach who lives in Red Bluff.
