THETA CHI PAGE 3 C oming off of our memorable Centennial Celebration this past Fall semester, the Chapter is looking forward to a prosperous and eventful new year. Looking back, Fall 2016 was filled with both new and traditional events. While we started a new fundraising event, Theta Chi: Chicken and Waffles, benefiting the USO, we also reveled in our traditions, namely the Centennial Celebration. Introducing New Philanthropies One of the most memorable experiences of the Fall semester was our proud new event, Theta Chi: Chicken and Waffles. In our inaugural service project, we served chicken and waffles from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. and raised $1,500 for the USO. This project was headed by Kush Karve '16 and me in the hopes of adding a supplemental philanthropy and increasing the amount of money our Chapter donates to worthy causes. In addition to Chicken and Waffles, we also had our annual philanthropy in honor of our late brother Kyle Schumann '01. We recently changed our event from a kickball tournament to talent show. I am proud to say that we surpassed our own expectations and raised more than $4,000 for the Phoenix House! Transporting the Okefenokee Oar The Florida-Georgia football game in Jacksonville provided us a fun opportunity to get out of the Swamp and travel as an organization to support our Florida Gators. Zac Copper '14, involved with the Orange and Blue staff, was able to give Theta Chi the pleasure of transporting the Okefenokee Oar to the game. In the absence of a trophy, the oar is awarded to the winner of the Florida-Georgia game. The oar is 10 feet long and carved out of a 1,000-year-old cypress tree and is kept by the winner of the game until next year's Florida-Georgia game. The new pledge class has 10 legacies, which purports to show the true brotherhood of Tau Chapter. Many of these men were encouraged to explore other options during fraternity recruitment; however, all 10 men felt most at home here at Theta Chi. Last Fall, we also inducted Brenden Collins '13, Matt Glover '13, and Connor Poplewko '14 into Florida Blue Key. Additionally, the former chapter president, Shane Hanney '14, was elected IFC president and will be presiding over the entire Interfraternity Council. Also within IFC, Jon Nickas '15 became the assistant director of operations. Outside of IFC, Matt Hudson '16 became a student senator. In regards sorority relations, I am proud to say that Theta Chi participated in all 10 Fall Panhellenic philanthropies, including Zack Soliman '14 winning Delta Gamma Anchor Man. The Fall has proved that we are eager to maintain Theta Chi's reputation for being one of the most involved fraternities on campus. Last semester, 20 new members registered for Dance Marathon. Additionally, Jim Wheeler '16, Conrad Ager '16, and Travis Hoffmann '16 became Dance Marathon assistant directors. We also had involvement in Student Government Productions, Gators Going Green, and numerous other organizations on campus. Looking Ahead Altogether, the state of our Chapter is strong. We are continuing our legacy of involvement and campus leadership, as well as forging new legacies through innovative programs like Chicken and Waffles. We look forward to hosting our next alumni event at the Orange and Blue game.
