Bryan Honda presents The Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra's "Wild, Wild
West" themed concert Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Huff Concert Hall on
the campus of Methodist University.
"This is the fourth concert of our 2016-2017 season and it has a Wild, Wild
West theme and there are a couple of pieces that are from western ballets,"
said Julia Atkins,
director of Artistic
Operations and
Marketing. "The
main focus of this
season was our
auditioning con-
ductors and telling
the audience they
get to have a say
on whom they like
and whom they would like to see as their next conductor of the Fayetteville
Symphony Orchestra."
The concert, entitled "The Wild, Wild West," will feature classical and
popular works that include Aaron Copeland's Four Dance Episodes, the
theme from the hit TV show Wild Wild West, John Williams' The Cowboys
Overture, Rossini's William Tell Overture and more. A few of the selections
will be performed by students of the Fayetteville Symphony Youth Orches-
tra. All of the students will be seated beside a professional musician of the
symphony to get the true experience of playing for an orchestra. "They are
going to play three pieces, side-by-side with the professionals on stage,
which is a treat for them," said Atkins. "This is a good experience for the
children and our professional musicians love it, too, and like sitting next to
those children." Atkins added that there are over 60 children participating
in their youth orchestra.
The performance features auditioning guest conductor Joseph Young from
the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. This concert will be considered his audi-
tion for the position and the audience will have an opportunity to give their
feedback on his performance and potential for becoming the leader of The
Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. "He is our fourth auditioning candidate
this season, so
each concert we
have had a differ-
ent conductor and
all five of them
are auditioning
for the position
of music director
and conductor of
The Fayetteville
Symphony," said
Atkins. "Young is currently the Assistant Conductor of the Atlanta Sympho-
ny and the Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra."
A pre-concert talk with the FSO "Music Nerd" and Joseph Young will begin
at 6:45 p.m.
"We encourage the audience to get in the mood and come dressed in their
cowboy boots and hats," said Atkins. "We are anticipating a large crowd for
this concert so arrive early and purchase your tickets ahead of time online
or by phone at the Symphony Office."
Tickets are $27 for adults, $24 for seniors and military, $11
for students with a valid ID and children 6-18, and children 5
and under are free. For more infor-
mation visit www.fayettevillesym-
