Discover the MASA peace of mind For over forty years MASA has been providing its 1 1/2 million plus members the peace of mind knowing that in their hour of need help is only a phone call away, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. MASA members also welcome to attend Wednesday, Feb. 8th Thursday, Feb. 9th The Quartzsite Historical Pageant "A Walk in the Past" will be held at the Hi Jolly Cemetery on Saturday Febru- ary 18 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Everyone is invited to come and meet some of the "characters" that made out town such a great place to live and work. You will meet some of the early pio- neers and fi nd out who the families were that fi rst came to the area and settled here in the early 1800s. We are celebrating our 150th anniversary/birthday this year-- Quartzsite was founded in 1867 be- fore it was even called Quartzsite (that came later when they had their fi rst post offi ce). Some of the pioneer families that you will meet still have descendants living here today--and you can fi nd a lot of them remem- bered and honored by having streets named after them. This look into the past 150 years of Quartzsite history will be an afternoon of lots of fun and learning about out town at the same time. Our players will all be dressed up in period costumes and there will be several indivdual characters por- trayed as well as a few couples and we even have some skits along the way. Due to the fragility of the graves themselves, we will have the walk- ways inside the cemetery roped off to groups--in the past it was no- ticed that people in the groups had trouble walking around the graves when there was not much space in between, and the chance of falling or injuring someone or having any of the gravesites damaged made it worrisome, so the last time we did a historical walk two years ago, we de- cided to have it on the outside of the cemetery itself, and have the players be near the fence separating the actu- al graves. That way, people can walk around the outside of the ropes and it will make it much safer and keep any damage to a minimum. It worked out so well, and once the pageant is over, the cemetery will be opened up again to anyone who wishes to visit inside as long as there are no big groups. There will be all kinds of things going on at this pageant, and many characters from history that you might not have heard of yet. We are hoping to have 150 years worth of information about who the early pio- neers were and how their sacrifi ces and hard work helped the town sur- vive when it once got to the point that it was declared a ghost town and only had 12 families here. We also want to show how the people who have made this their destination for fun have made Quartzsite what it is today! We are still looking for a few actors to fi ll in a couple of roles, and we also need some help with setting up and tearing down after the pageant if anyone has some time and a pickup truck to help bring all the chairs and tables we will need, as well as some of the props. If you have any time and would like to be one of the participants in the pageant, or can be behind the scenes helping, we sure would appreciate it. We want this pageant to be a big part of the 150th cel- ebration this winter, and if it goes well we may be doing it again next winter since the celebrations are going to be on until the end of next season as well. Please call Joanne at 927-6551 for any further information about the play or to volunteer to help. You can also call the Quartzsite Business Chamber of Commerce or stop in and talk to Cee Carnevale about it as well. We hope that you will be a part of our wonder- ful celebration of our town's 150th sesquicentennial celebrations!! If you can't participate, please come out and join in all the fun anyway--the pageant starts at 1 p.m. and will be going on un- til 4 p.m.--but you can come anytime during those hours since tour groups will be going at intervals all afternoon- -if you get there and have to wait for the next group to take you around, you can always have a seat near the sarsa- parilla bar and enjoy a drink or just sit while waiting, or you can walk around and see what else will be there and just join in the tour group along the way. Hope to see you there!!
