GIRLS BASKETBALL 3localteamssufferdefeats By Chip Thompson editor@redbluffdailynews.com @editorchip on Twitter REDBLUFF The Red Bluff Spar- tans boys basketball team kept pace with the visiting Shasta Wolves through much of the first period Tuesday night, but fell behind and were never able to catch up, losing 66-51. In a fast-paced, physical first period the Spartans jumped ahead early led 8-7 with 3 min- utes to go, but finished down 19-13. The Spartans shooters went cold in the second and the Wolves pulled away to take a 37- 20 lead into the half. It would prove too much for Red Bluff to overcome in the third, when the Wolves stretched the lead to 18 at one point before finishing up 50-34. Some well-timed threes from Eric Spencer, Evan Tanner and Eric Gorden helped the Spartans narrow the lead and pull within 12 with 2:27 to play, but there just weren't enough ticks left on the clock and Shasta came away with the win. Gorden led the Spartans with 13 points, including a trio of threes; Payton Edwards and Jar- ron Barrow had 8 points each, the latter with a pair of threes; Brayden Hutchins had 7 points and Spencer had 6 points and a three. The Spartans go to 8-10 over- all and 1-3 in league play and will host the Pleasant Valley Vi- kings (15-5 overall, 4-0 league) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
