ByHeatherHoelscher hhoelscher@redbluffdailynews. com @DN_Heather on Twitter RED BLUFF The 2017 Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale held the Stock Dog tri- als Wednesday in prepa- ration for the 39th annual Red Bluff Stock Dog Sale to take place at 3:30 p.m. Fri- day at the Don Smith Pavil- ion at the Tehama District Fairground. The second day of work- ing the stock dogs will be held inside the Pauline Davis Pavilion at 7 p.m. Thursday. There are five judges at the trials who are looking to see how well the dogs can keep the cattle to- gether, said Adam Owens, Bull & Gelding Sale man- ager. The dogs must direct the cattle and gather them into the pen. Out of the five scores the highest and the low- est scores are dropped and the remaining three scores are averaged, Ow- ens said. The judges will give points based on whether the dog can stop the cat- tle, has obedience and has control. There are 50 points pos- sible for a dog that is able to go to the lead of the lead cow and shows suf- ficient power to stop and control the cattle when it is challenged. There are 25 points pos- sible for dogs who obey commands and tries to help the handler accom- plish something and 25 possible points if the dog can balance the cattle to the handler and keeps the cattle together and under control. Jim Zollman, handler and trainer for the bor- der collie ZBC Gus, said it takes a lot of commitment and work to get these dogs ready for this event. The dogs are outside working and training ev- ery day. The goal is to get the best out of each dog that is brought to an event like this, Zollman said. Gus was bred by Mandi Post of Wallowa, Oregon, who states in the Stock Dogs booklet that Gus is athletic and well-built. Gus is used on bulls, year- lings and pairs. Dogs in the sale are be- tween 12 and 48 months old and all dogs compete in one class, Owens said in the Stock Dog Sale in- formation. The sale committee will sift dogs that are unable to perform at a high level or are unsound. For those who cannot attend the trials can view them online at redbluff- bullsale.com and for the sale it will be streamed on liveauctions.tv, which allows anyone to pre-reg- ister and bid online from anywhere in the world. You may also call the of- fice to make bids over the phone. For more information and to bid by phone, call the Red Bluff Bull & Geld- ing Sale office at 527-2045. By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF Art in all styles will be on display through Saturday in the gem building at the Te- hama District Fairground for the seventh annual Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale Western Art Show. "We have a lot of orig- inal, one-of-a-kind work," said show manager Jane Daugherty. "I'm tickled with the quality and sub- ject matter of the pieces we got this year. We have art- ists from Montana, Texas, Wyoming and Arizona in addition to many local art- ists from both California and Oregon." The show includes 127 entries in a variety of me- diums including painting, drawing, sculptures, pho- tography, leather engrav- ing and silverwork. Paint- ing and drawing were judged by Mia DeLode of Montana who is a painter and accomplished artist in her own right, Daugh- erty said. Bryan Neubert of Al- turas, who is a leather braider and horse trainer, judged the pieces in the leather work competition while Tehama County Photo Club members Bar- bara Luzzader and Claire Carbonnel judged the pho- tography. The event was created as something to add a little extra to the Bull & Gelding Sale. It gives something different for people to see that changes just a little every year and is kept fresh with new entries, Daugh- erty said. Gene Serr of Red Bluff attended Wednesday after- noon and said he has en- joyed coming to the show for the last three years. "I'm impressed," Serr said. "I'm glad I came." Suzanne Bears of Ger- ber said she started com- ing to the art show as a vis- itor the first year and has been attending as an artist since the second year. She and her husband sold bulls at a sale in Klamath Falls so when she moved to Red Bluff to be closer to fam- ily she ended up bringing bulls to the Red Bluff sale the first year and loved the art show. "It's a quality show," Bears said. "It's got a good variety and good subject matter. Seeing the local artwork alongside the art from elsewhere is great and helps you appreciate the talent we have here." A special reception will be held 5-8 p.m. Thursday with a cost of $10 if attend- ees want a commemorative Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale wine glass that comes with a few tastings. Vine- yards on hand will include Burnsini Vineyards of Cot- tonwood, Strawhouse Cel- lars of Chico and Abbey of New Clairvaux in Vina.
