CUMBERLAND The Friends of the Cumberland County Library and Public Information Center will hold book sales Tuesday, Aug. 14, and Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Headquarters Library at 300 Maiden Lane. The Aug. 14 Members Only sale will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Anyone who is not a member of the Friends of the Library may join at the sale or join online at www.cumberland.lib.nc.us. The Aug. 18 book sale is open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friends of Library to Hold Book Sales Thousands of books in good condition will be on sale. Entrance to the book sale is at the Headquarters Library through the back door near the benches by the creek. Cash or checks are the only payment methods accepted. Health Department Offers Tdap Vaccine The Cumberland County Department of Public Health is offering the tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine free to the public during regular business hours. The vaccine is recommended for older adults and anyone with children in their household. Pertussis is more commonly known as whooping cough. The Tdap vaccine is required for children entering the sixth grade and for college students before entry into a college. Pregnant mothers are encouraged to get the vaccine to prevent sickness in their home after infants are born. The Tdap vaccine is available at the Health Department's immunization clinic during regular business hours, which are 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Friday hours are 8 to 11:30 a.m. Patients are encouraged to bring their vaccination records to determine if they need any other vaccines. The job fair is from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Headquarters Library at 300 Maiden Lane. The job fair is sponsored by the Cumberland Community Foundation in partnership with the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health. "What is different about this job fair is that the library has received a grant to attract more people by introducing a health component to the fair," said Larry Gavin, West Regional Branch Library Manager. "The grant is designed to assist local Cumberland County residents who are unemployed or underemployed." Gavin said 822 people attended the last job fair hosted by the library. The added health component at the Aug. 15 job fair will provide assessments of health risks, provide life-saving health information to participants and make referrals to local health organizations.
