(AP) — The Oakland Athletics knew their remarkable run of suc- cess during a memorable July would have to end at some point. Alex Cobb shut down Oakland for seven innings and Carlos Pena homered as the Tampa Bay Rays handed the A's their first back-to-back losses since June with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday. ''We'll grind through it. We haven't lost a series in a while and we have to move for- ward,'' Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. Allmendinger had a ride to envy with one of NASCAR's top teams end in stunning disgrace. He can only hope his failed drug tests don't cost him his career. Allmendinger's first season with Penske Racing was an abbreviated one after team owner Roger Penske announced Wednesday that he had fired his suspended driver three weeks after he tested positive for a banned amphetamine. ''AJ is a terrific driver, a good person and it is very A.J. Allmendinger unfortunate that we have to separate at this time,'' Penske said. ''We have invested great- ly in AJ and we were confident in his success with our team. The decision to dismiss him is consistent with how we would treat any other Penske Racing team member under similar circumstances. As AJ begins NASCAR's 'Road to Recovery' program, we wish him the best and look forward to seeing him com- pete again in NASCAR.'' The A's were almost perfect last month, going 19-5 for the best July in franchise his- tory as they bolted back into the AL playoff race behind stellar pitching and late-inning dramatics from the hitters. All that was missing on Wednesday. Brandon Inge provided the only run with a homer in the fifth and Jarrod Parker allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings. ''I think we all know the game has its ups and downs and we just have to stick with it, keep battling,'' Inge said. ''There are plenty of guys here who can pick up the slack. We'll just keep going at it.'' Pena, who drove in five runs in the series, hit an RBI double in the sixth inning and a solo homer in the eighth for the Rays, who won three straight series on one trip for the fourth time in franchise history. The wins over Baltimore, the Angels and A's marked the first time Tampa Bay won three straight road series against winning teams. ''It's pretty spectacular,'' manager Joe Maddon said. Then Allison Schmitt dealt more heartache to the team from Down Under. Adrian, a 23-year-old largely overshad- owed by American stars such as Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, made a name for himself by winning the 100-meter Olympic freestyle Wednesday. He lunged to the wall to edge James ''The Missile'' Magnussen by one-hundredth of a second — the slightest margin possible — and again deny Australia its first individual swimming gold of the London Games. Adrian pounded the water, then put his hands over his eyes while dangling over the lane rope, as if he couldn't believe the ''1'' beside his name.
