Bill@upandcomingweekly.com. PUBLISHER'S PEN Whoa! Slow down people! Law-enforcement offi cers, both city and county, need to crack down on careless and aggressive drivers who make driving around Fayetteville and Cumberland County so hazardous to our health. In just one day (last Thursday) I personally witnessed several auto accidents (all rear-end collisions) caused by speeding, careless and aggressive driving. Two of these accidents were on Bragg Boulevard and the other on Skibo Road near Cross Creek Mall. Thank goodness only slight injuries resulted and no serious casualties or deaths were reported. None the less, this scary, everyday life-threatening situation could be remedied with aggressive, no-nonsense responsible law enforcement. There is also another relevant and timely reason for cracking down on these speeding idiots — taxes. That's right, taxes. No one wants to see local taxes increase. Yet there is talk a plenty about a one cent increase in the Cumberland County sales tax. And, for what? More EMS and fi re department services. Go fi gure. At the three "non-life-threatening" accidents I witnessed, there were plenty of fi re trucks, one or two EMS vehicles and at least two or three law enforcement personnel. Makes you wonder, who really are our fi rst responders? And, why the huge highway party at the taxpayer expense? It seems a little excessive. Instead, our public servants should be striving to be more effective, effi cient and resourceful conserving our resources and practicing fi scal effi ciencies. Instead, too many local government agencies are fi nding it easier to just demand more money to buy more "stuff" under the guise of doing their job and keeping us safe. Well folks, call me crazy, but from where I stand, a little preventive governance and well placed execution is what we need more of to make our community safe and more prosperous. In this economy, Less should be the new More. In this example of excessive speeding and blatant disregard for our traffi c laws, the new More might mean something like this to our community: • Safer streets • Fewer accidents • Fewer casualties • Fewer demands on fi rst responders • Lower costs for funding fi rst responders • Reduced traffi c in emergency rooms • A decrease in the loss of property • Lower insurance rates • More city/county revenue from traffi c citations, penalties and fi nes etc., and a much, much safer community. So, what begins as serious and aggressive law enforcement could end with a safer community. Wow! What's not to like? Unless, of course, you're a professional bureaucrat.
