The fi nds at Hauser, and the subsequent interest in collect- ing and cutting open the unique nod- ules found there, sparked an interest in rockhounding and lapidary as a leisure- ly pursuit. As the economy recovered from the Great Depression and people began to have more time and money for leisure activities, rockhounds fl ocked to the area. Many of the surface geodes were collected, and the work of digging the nodules out of layers of volcanic tuff and rhyolite had begun. Some of the Hauser deposits became known affec- tionately as the "Hauser Hole". Today, the Hauser Beds and the Pota- to Patch still produce beautiful thun- deregg nodules, agates, and geodes.
