After the collision, Pena fled the scene on foot but was shortly apprehended, according to the release. A driving-under-the-in- fluence investigation was conducted and it was deter- mined that Pena was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage at the time of the collision. Pena was arrested and booked into Tehama County Jail on the felony charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxi- cated and hit and run caus- ing a death. He is being held on a $225,000 bail. Both directions of traf- fic were also blocked in the 9300 block of San Benito near a store until about 7:30 p.m. Saturday when the roadway was re-opened. Santa Claus rode in on the city's fire en- gine and thanks to Corning Police and Public Works we were able to light the tree. The biggest thing is I would like to thank all our sponsors and volunteers that help make this possi- ble. We have an extremely generous community." There was a bit of time between the initial count down for the tree and when it was lit, but thanks to the police department and public works it was a success and some of the crowd occupied the time by singing Christmas carols. Pamela Holden of Corn- ing was one of those who came out to watch the pa- rade with her family and has been coming since the 1980s or 1990s back when it was a lighted tractor pa- rade, she said. She remembers well pushing a rototiller up the two-mile parade route when it was raining her first year in the parade, Holden said. "Slowly over the years they've added other things," Holden said. "I've always thought it was charming. My favorite part of it is that it's a hometown thing. Neighbors and peo- ple come together and I like that they honor the true reason for the sea- son. We're now bringing our third generation of our family to the parade." Holden likes that the pa- rade has grown over the years, she said. "I hope that it continues to grow and I hope that they always remember Christ- mas here," Holden said. Local performers do- nated their time to en- tertain including 2015- 2016 Junior Miss Tehama County Matilyn Szychulda, Asylum Parkour, Red Bluff High School Band and Choir. Los Molinos resi- dent Terry Owen, known to many in the community as Santa, was on hand as well. For those who missed the toy drive, there are still boxes out in various loca- tions in the community that will take collections through Dec. 15. Locations include Red Bluff Fire De- partment, US Bank, Wal- greens and Cal Fire at the Red Bluff headquarters and Lake California Volunteer stations. At least 30 cards were given to officers and others involved in the toy drive Saturday called ran- dom act of kindness cards. The cards could be given out for everything from a person with a flat tire to someone who needed gas in which they could turn the card over to Sousa and get help. "The main thing we want people to know is that all of our toys collected in Te- hama County stay in Te- hama County," said Tehama Coiunty Toys for Tots As- sistant Coordinator Allyca Sousa. "Almost all of our col- lections are from the pub- lic and that's what helps us keep going to help these children in need," she said. Toys are given to various organizations to help out in years where their collec- tion may run low such as the Red Bluff Elks Lodge, Red Bluff Chips For Kids, Corning Volunteer Fire Department and the Ger- ber Children's Christmas Fiesta, which is coming up on Dec. 17. For more information on Tehama County Toys for Tots visit the Facebook page. Toys FROM PAGE 1 about the first 30 years of the group and will be on dis- play there for the next two months. The front portion displayed work from more recent members. Some of the work from Friday will also be on display at the Te- hama County Library. "There's everything on display including oil paint- ing, water color, acrylic, alcohol inks, ceramics, leather necklaces, jewelry, wood burning, color pen- cil, pastels, graphite, char- coal and more," Sipes said. "We're looking for anything that we can use to express or experiment with. One of our artists uses coffee like water color." Connie Maxey also joined the group in 2005 and be- came the president in 2006, which she held for seven years before stepping down and becoming the group historian. She has enjoyed putting together the books of history the group keeps and getting to look at the old ones in preparation for Friday's event, she said. They have books all the way back to 1956 with pic- tures and newspaper arti- cles over the years," Maxey said. "The first book is mostly minutes talking about the venues and the galleries they had in town. They were very devoted to the books." The Red Bluff Art Asso- ciation started as nine peo- ple who were going to an art class together and de- cided to start meeting as an association after the class ended, Maxey said. The group started in Feb- ruary 1956 meeting at Mar- jorie Garrett's house with Dr. Cahoone Yuen serv- ing as the first chairman. Other founding members included Margaret Rae, Jewel Quisenberry, Art Ger- man, Evelyn Hinkle, Linda Eggleston, Dan Souza and Inez Hinkle. The same group was also involved in the founding of the Kelly- Griggs House Museum As- sociation that preserved an 1880's Victorian located at 311 Washington St. to be used as a museum. Maxey first became in- volved after taking a wa- ter color class with Jim Shievy and it took about six months to convince her to join as she was very shy back then, she said. "Being involved with this organization has helped me not to be shy," Maxey said. "I've grown a lot and ex- panded my horizons, be- coming more confident. What I like about the group is you all have the same passion in life and in being life-long learners. We were mentees and now we have become the mentors of the group." Sipes said she is excited to see things move forward with the association get- ting involved in the new art center planned for the corner of Main and Pine where the Green Room community art studio will also reside. The hope is to expand beyond their weekly meetings at 10 a.m. Thursdays at the Tehama District Fairgrounds to include classes in the eve- nings and weekends. "We're almost hav- ing a renaissance and we are hoping to do evening events and some Saturdays to get out and get the kids involved and those who work when we normally meet."
