The AreTê pg. 2 T he values and ideals of Chi Psi are best summarized by John Walter Wayland's The True Gentleman: The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others rather than his own; and who appears well in any company; a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe. On May 4, George Philbrick Brace '62 entered Chapter Eternal. Throughout his life, George exemplified the highest ideals and the true meaning of what it meant to be a Chi Psi gentleman and brother. George passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, following a brief battle with glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve and worked in commercial banking for more than 50 years. Additionally, George's community involvement was extensive, and he gave freely of his experience, time, and money to many organizations, including Alpha Theta Delta. George was integral in leading the new annex project. Not only did he give his own time and money, but he also rallied many of his brothers to do the same. He also helped obtain the bank financing for the short- and long-term needs of the Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Kim; his sons, Phil and Nick; his stepdaughters, Vail and Shannon; and by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. George's commitment, strength, and love will be missed and remembered.
