POLICE LOGS Shasta College and The McConnell Foundation are working together on an ini- tiative to increase educa- tional opportunities. North State Together was recently awarded a three-year, $2.5 million grant by The McConnell Foundation to support a regional Cradle to Ca- reer collaborative. It was formed out of the success- ful work of Expect More Tehama and Reach Higher Shasta. North State Together will add Trinity, Siskiyou and Modoc counties to the efforts of Shasta and Te- hama counties. The goal of this initia- tive is to work with each county to help them ad- dress their unique commu- nity needs by leveraging partnerships in the busi- ness, philanthropic, non- profit, civic, faith and edu- cational communities. A support team of ded- icated staff will help plan, manage, and advocate for partnerships and project based funding through- out the five counties. The Shasta College Foundation, a nonprofit arm of Shasta College, will serve as the fiscal agent for North State Together. "It is an honor for Shasta College to take the lead in bringing committed part- ners together in Northern California, and assist peo- ple and communities in career advancement, eco- nomic growth, and im- proved health," said Joe Wyse, superintendent and president of Shasta Col- lege. "Shasta College is ex- cited to provide the sup- port and coordination re- quired to create positive economic and educational change in our region in the form of North State Together. We look forward to taking on this important role and welcome the com- munities we serve to cele- brate the accomplishments with us along the way." REDDING North state gets better working together Edwin J. Bedell, of Be- dell and Meyers, owners of the Clunie hotel, Sac- ramento, arrived in Red Bluff yesterday and soon was singing the praises of the city. Bedell is a strong booster for the valley and one of the firm believers in her future. He is one of those young, aggressive hotel men, which are rap- idly making themselves felt throughout the state. "Thought I was strik- ing a dead community when I started for here," said Bedell, "because many persons told me the Espee had moved to Gerber, but believe me I never found a livelier town nor more enthusi- astic businessmen than I met right here. You can't make me believe that any community is dead with such boosters. I am go- ing to help bury the Red Bluff knockers as I pro- ceed through the valley." —Nov.22,1916 100 YEARS AGO...
