Kappa Kappa Gamma | 3 Our Needs and Opportunities W hile the Kappa experience is certainly more than the physical structure of the chapter house, our home undoubtedly plays a significant role in the development of our sisters and serves as a proud symbol of our shared values and goals. College campus living has changed significantly over the past 10 to 15 years. The experience is wholly different than what most of our alumnae will remember. Residential facilities are the second most important factor in the college decision-making process behind the availability of a student's intended major. This is understandable considering that students spend 70% of their time within their living environment. It has become clear that we must make a major investment in our chapter house if we are to remain competitive, provide a quality living environment, and ensure that we are providing a home that offers both community and privacy. The Growing Demand for Greek Life Chapter size at University of Kentucky has grown considerably, and we no longer have enough space for all members to meet together. Average chapter size is more than 200 members; Kappa has over 350 members! The demand to live in the chapter house is greater than ever as is the need for common and educational space. In order to ensure that our sisterhood remains strong, we must accommodate the growing membership numbers. Simply put, the time to expand our chapter facility is now. Pursuing Excellence The sorority house has always been an environment that fosters academic excellence; however, study space and academic needs have changed. To remain academically competitive, we must address the needs of today's student. Not only do we need to provide additional study space within the chapter house, but a college living facility must also include state-of-the-art technology. Leading e Competition Other sororities and fraternities at UK are evaluating their options to make major investments in their facilities or build new chapter houses. The University's master plan calls for a complete renovation or rebuild of every residential unit on campus in order to ensure top students continue to attend UK. Thus, we must consider how we can update our home to ensure students continue to consider Greek residences during their stay on campus. We no longer meet the needs of today's collegians. Our aging facility needs to be updated to offer our Beta Chi members the tools they need to be successful and competitive in today's college environment.
