8A Daily News – Saturday, July 21, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith GOD-ORDAINED AUTHORITY Pastor Emeritus Raymond Davis Jr., Greater Corinthian Church of the Christ, Kansas City, Mo.: Authority is the issue no matter how we may define higher powers. We all have a basic common sense of elected officials that are higher powers operating in human governments. This is God-ordained authority, and we shouldn't pretend they aren't there. There are human figures of higher powers that encourage us to be good citizens, acting in accordance with our being a free responsible people. We are subject to federal, state and local government. We are not in an uncertain state of mind about our responsibility to pay taxes. Jesus' declaration was, "Render therefore unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's and to God things that are God's." (Matthew 22:21) This understanding of "higher power" gives us all common ground. "Let every soul (person) be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God; the powers that be are ordained of God. Whoso- ever resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God." (Romans 13:1-2) Governmental powers and human figures of author- How can anyone lack sense of higher power? ity derive their powers from the consent of the people. But there are tyrants running tyrannical regimes and dictatorships. Thank God we are not of the Syrian cir- cumstance, or even any others of abusive intent. POWER OF COMPASSION Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Buddhist Center & Monastery, Kansas City: We all know people who are perfectly moral people, who lead meaningful lives but do not believe in a higher power. So, it is obvious that belief in a higher power alone is not necessary to being a good person. Christians are sane His Holiness the Dalai Lama said: "The essence of all religions is love, compassion and tolerance. These qualities are necessities, not luxuries, in fact the very survival of our planet is dependent upon them. When you are motivated by kindness and compassion, your particular type of religious faith is unimportant. What is important is living your life in a loving and compas- sionate way." Even those who may not believe in a higher power can have a sense of something larger than themselves. At night when we look up at the stars and see the vast- ness of the universe we may feel something larger than ourselves. When we open our hearts and allow our- selves to feel that sense of wonder, awe and mystery we are connecting with something larger than our- selves. From the Buddhist perspective the thing that is larg- er than ourselves is that vast interconnectedness of everything in the universe. When we can actually feel this interconnectedness then we can see there is no dif- ference between "self" and "other." When we are able to drop such dualities then we naturally want to help our fellow beings. This kind of universal compassion and loving-kindness then becomes a "higher power." Definition of sane: Having a sound healthy mind, having or showing sound judgment, reasonable, and able to anticipate and appraise the effect of one's actions In today's society Christians are "slaughtered" by the media and by many individuals. We are accused of hate crimes when our words may not be politically correct. We are often dis- played as being mentally unstable, while actually the majority of Chris- tians are the sanest people upon the face of this earth. Today the average person makes life decisions based upon their own personal opinions, the opinions of friends or the most popular guru of the day. Their emotions and feelings often over-rule any amount of wisdom. Such is common to all of mankind when God's guidelines are absent in a life. This writing will not condemn any particular religion or philosophy that other people may have. My thoughts are only directed towards individual readers of this article, to encourage them to consider the WISDOM found within the pages of the Bible. Why? Because God has given us a life man- ual, or, one might say "a love letter," so that we will have the wisdom of the ages available to us from the Holy Spirit of God Himself. The unwise do not even believe in God. "Only fools say in their hearts, there is no God…" (Psalm 14:1). "For ever since the world was created, peo- ple have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God" (Romans 1:20). But the wisdom found in God's Word helps us live in safety. The Word of God will guide us BOULDER CREEK, (MCT) — A homeless car- penter who's living in the parking lot of a restaurant in downtown Boulder Creek hopes to succeed where Jesus failed. For the past seven months, 49-year-old Buck Buchner's operated a used bookstore out of a side room of Taqueria Los Ami- gos, its walls lined with thousands of books on every subject imaginable, tabletops covered with boxes upon boxes of decades-old books on histo- into all truth. Take just one helpful Scripture about anger: "Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back" (Proverbs 29:11). Holding anger back often saves lives, and keeps us from messy life situations. Do you desire peace in your home and environ- ment? Here is another good answer from Scrip- ture: "For jealously and selfishness are not God's wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition there you will find disorder and evil of every kind. But the wis- dom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness" (James 3:15-18). Wow! That is quite a promise from God's Word. When we reap a harvest of righteousness, we are receiving bless- ing and goodness from God's hand. There is still another promise that will answer many questions, because we may be asking, "Just where do we find such wisdom?" In the book of James, chapter 1 and verses 5 to 8, it says, "If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyal- ty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. ry, evolution, art, war, fic- tion and everything in between. Patricia Martin GodTalk Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world and they are unstable in everything they do." How do you "cash in" on the promises of God as found in the Bible? You must be born into the family of God. The following Scripture is speaking of Jesus: "He came into the world he created, but the world didn't recognize him. He came to his own people, and even they reject- ed him. But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn – not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God" (John 1:10-13). If you study the Gospel of John, chapter 3, you will find more information about being born into the Family of God. We have two births; one is the physical birth and the other our spiritual birth, when we become children of God. We are all creations of God, but we must be "born again by the Holy Spirit" to become a child of God. This opens all of God's promises to us. "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths" (Proverbs 3:6). Patricia Martin leads the God's Precious Jewels ministry in Red Bluff, a ministry dedicated to clothing Native American children mired in poverty on their reservations. She also leads Jehovah Rapha, a ministry of healing and sharing for those surviving and addressing cancer. Self-described 'messiah' moonlights as used bookseller Buchner, a former gener- al contractor, built the book- shelves himself, then used a black pen to write on the thick, wooden boards, crudely separating the tomes into different sub- jects. He said he started out with only a few hundred books, which he gleaned from a sales at a public library in Saratoga, then peddled on sidewalks from Los Gatos to Santa Cruz. By December, he found himself in Boulder Creek, selling books from the side- walk in front of the San Lorenzo Valley Water Dis- trict office. Taqueria Los Amigos was right next door, and he became aware of the then-vacant room inside the restaurant when he saw Santa and his elves there, greeting children over the holidays. "I'd been looking every- where in Boulder Creek for a retail spot," said Buchner, who estimated his collec- tion now exceeds 3,000 books.
