Representative Randy McDaniel '90 was asked to share the importance of Beta in his own life and how his experience has guided his decisions many years later. Randy went through recruitment in the summer of 1986 and decided to join Beta because it had "everything he was looking for." Randy continued, "Beta's excellence in grades, excellence in athletics, and excellence in activities was unlike any other house." Another great influence in his fraternity decision was his brother Mark McDaniel '86, who served as president of Beta the year before Randy pledged. "One of the great things about the house was that we had a lot of members in student government," Randy explained. He had support from his brothers, which led to him being elected to Student Congress, chair of Student Congress, and later, student body president. "I credit a large amount of my good fortune to my brothers. Beta had the largest contingency of any other house in student government." Support from his fraternity brothers in running for elected office did not end there. In 2006, Randy decided he was going to run to represent Oklahoma's 83rd district, and his first call for support was to a Beta brother. "One of the first calls I made was to a fraternity brother who has been very successful. He immediately wanted to support me and donated the maximum amount allowed to my campaign. I have also had a lot of other brothers support me along the way by hosting fundraisers, putting out signs, door knocking, and just going to vote." Randy was a proud member of the Army ROTC in OU. Upon graduation, he served in active duty during Desert Storm. He was a member of the National Guard and retired with the rank of Captain. Randy graduated with a degree in economics from OU and went to graduate school in England. Upon his arrival home, he went directly into the financial services industry. He has used much of what he has learned in his career to make decisions as a representative. "I have been elected for 10 years, and my areas of focus are very compatible to my career." Randy has focused on areas such as retirement, business, and investments. "Beta was a difference maker in my life," Randy explained. It brought a sense of community, focus, and expectation. "I think a lot of people who go to a University who don't ever get a sense of community can lose their way and won't have as much success." Randy is married to his wife, Julie, a nurse practitioner who works in the veteran's hospital. Together they have two children, John and Grace. In his free time, he likes to play golf with his father, as well as other friends and family. Do you have a suggestion for an alumni spotlight? E-mail Jackson Lisle '15 at jackson.r.lisle@gmail.com
