The DAR is a nonprofit women's volunteer service organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. It has 180,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the United States and internationally. Ann lives in Arvada, Colo. Sandra Stecher Harper '72 was named Outstanding Alumna of the Texas Tech University College of Education in 2011. She was also a member of the Society for the Advancement of Management, and received the Management Excellence Award in 2005 and the Women in Careers Award in 2000. "A chapter is only as strong as its support group and the alumnae provide the guidance the chapter needs to succeed," Sally says. "We are 'the wind beneath their wings.'" As soon as she attended her first recruitment event, she felt at home at Gamma Xi. "It was in an un- air-conditioned dorm, but I was so excited that I didn't mind being hot!" She recalls memories such as being a recruitment greeter dressed in a sailor suit and hat along with Vicki Vannoy Nixon '70 and Sheila Herberger Sibley '72. As an alumna, Sally has served in many capacities such as the alumnae president, recruitment advisor, house corporation treasurer, and now as house corporation member-at-large. She feels thankful to stay involved and give back to the chapter—she even designed the interior in the new chapter house. "I see the joy on the women's faces when they walk in the door," Sally says. "I love how they constantly use the facility, which I want to be their home away from home." It's important for her to connect with Gamma Xi sisters, as she recently met up with her Midland pledge sisters for a girls' weekend in Dallas. Once a month, she has lunch with the "DG Ya Ya Sisters," who are Barbara Bergman Robertson '71, Vicki Vannoy Nixon '70, Paula Hall Smith '72, Jan Talbert Childress, Arkansas '66, and Lisa Potts Cobb '09. Sally is self-employed with Sally Haliburton Design. She and her husband, Steve (Pinkie to most), live in Lubbock. They have two dogs, Chloe and Maggie Mae. In her spare time, she enjoys playing mahjongg, cooking, traveling, biking, and attending bible study. You can stay in contact with Sally at sallyhaliburton@sbcglobal.net. Sally handled all of the exterior and interior design at the DG lodge! D G
