Published by the Alumni Board of Trustees and the House Corporation – Volume 18, Issue 1 DELTA CHI, UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA CHAPTER – FALL 2016 "A Membership for a Lifetime" O n August 20, more than 80 Alabama Delta Chi Alumni, undergraduate members and guests gathered for our annual Coleman Awards Banquet at Inverness Country Club in Birmingham. Attendees were treated to a steak dinner and celebrated the awarding of the 2016 Jefferson J. Coleman Award to late Birmingham businessman Jim Calhoun '59 and current Alabama Secretary of Commerce Greg Canfield '82. Matt Scalici '80 returned as Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Aer the meal and Chapter updates from various Alumni and undergraduate members, the evening culminated in the presentation of the 2016 Coleman Awards. Our Chapter has continued to develop outstanding leaders who contribute much to our communities, states and nation. A founding Chapter member, Jefferson J. Coleman '29 served our Chapter and e University for many years. Recognition of his legacy and achievements also include his induction in Delta Chi's Order of the White Carnation and the naming of e University's Coleman Colosseum to recognize his long and distinguished career as a University Administrator. Jefferson also attended the Crimson Tide's first Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena as a Student Manager and attended every Tide bowl game for many years aerward. We have honored many outstanding men for the Coleman Award. Both Jim and Greg are representative leaders in the spirit of Jefferson J. Coleman. ey have each demonstrated outstanding leadership dating back to their student days at e University. We are very proud of Jim Calhoun and Greg Canfield and their service at so many levels. S ince his years at the Alabama Chapter of Delta Chi, Greg Canfield '82 has steadfastly worked to better the state of Alabama both at the local and state level. It is for his dedication to public service that he was named a Jefferson J. Coleman Award recipient for 2016. As a member of Delta Chi, Greg honed the leadership skills he would need to succeed in his political career. He served as President of his New Member class in the fall of 1978 as well as Executive Assistant to the President of the Student Government Association (SGA). rough SGA, Greg helped oversee the completion of the first student recreation center. Aer leaving e University, Greg entered the insurance and financial services field in 1990. ree years later he opened his own business, Canfield Insurance & Financial Services Inc., an insurance services firm marketed to businesses and individuals. He sold the company in 2008 and joined J.H. Berry Insurance in Birmingham. As President of the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce, Greg launched the organization's Business Development Committee, which promoted the community for commercial investment. In 2000, while serving as President of the Vestavia Hills City Council, he was instrumental in the development of Vestavia's Honoring a Loyal Brother Jim Calhoun '59 Receives Jefferson J. Coleman Award T he Jefferson J. Coleman Award is given only to alumni who truly exemplify the principles of the Fraternity. In 2016, Jim Calhoun '59 posthumously received the award for his many exemplary qualities. Jim passed away on October 10, 2015, and his wife, Brenda, and children, Wesley and Michelle, were present to proudly accept the award on Jim's behalf. Upon graduating in 1959, Jim served in France with the United States Air National Guard before embarking on a highly successful entrepreneurial career.
