The move announced Wednesday comes a little more than a week after the team designated Fuentes for assignment. The reliever finished 2-2 with five saves, three blown saves and a 6.84 ERA in 26 outings this season, including recording his 200th save May 2 at Boston to become the sixth left-hander in major league history to reach the mark. WARRIORS Sports SHARKS Vlasic signs 5-year extension SAN JOSE (AP) — The San Jose Sharks have signed defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic to a five-year contract extension through the 2017-18 season. Sharks general man- ager Doug Wilson says Wednesday that the team extended Vlasic because he ''can play in all situa- tions and has blossomed into a very trusted player on both sides of the puck.'' He said the Sharks are ''lucky to have him on our team for the next six seasons.'' The 25-year-old Vla- sic led the Sharks with 171 blocked shots last season, including a fran- chise-record eight on Dec. 23 vs. Los Angeles. In six seasons with San Jose, he has appeared in 471 regular- season games and racked up 133 points. The Montreal native was drafted 35th overall by San Jose in 2005. 3-team trade nets Hornets guard Jack OAKLAND (AP) — The Golden State Warriors are getting more for Dorell Wright after all — pending some last-minute paper- work, of course. The Warriors have agreed to send Wright to the Philadelphia 76ers in a three-team trade that will net guard Jarrett Jack from the New Orleans Hornets, two people familiar with the decision said Wednesday. The people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the trade is still being finalized, said the Hornets will receive the 76ers' draft rights to Edin Bavcic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in a salary- slashing move that also clears space in a crowded backcourt. Bavic is expected to remain in Europe next season. The 36-year-old has 204 career saves with a 3.58 ERA in 644 career appearances over 12 sea- sons with five clubs. He went 0-2 with a save, two blown saves, a 19.50 ERA and .452 opponents' aver- age over his final seven outings. Oakland returns to play Friday at Minnesota. Shark sign SF Bulls as ECHL affiliate SAN JOSE (AP) — The San Jose Sharks have signed an affiliation agree- ment with the San Francis- co Bulls of the ECHL for the 2012-13 season. The agreement announced Wednesday makes the Bulls the devel- opment affiliate for the team's inaugural season in San Francisco. The Bulls will play their home games at the Cow Palace, where the Sharks played their first two NHL sea- sons prior to moving to San Jose in 1993. The Worcester Sharks will still serve as San Jose's American Hockey League affiliate. The original proposed trade had the Warriors receiving Bavcic for Wright. Instead, the Hornets hopped in the mix to acquire Bavcic and hand the Warriors the veteran guard they've want- ed this offseason to play alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. ''Well new Orleans it's been real,'' Jack wrote on his Twitter page. He also thanked Hornets fans for their support. The move will clear about $5 million in cap space for New Orleans, which is expected to match Phoenix's four-year, $58 million offer to restricted free agent Eric Gordon. The trade gives the Hor- nets more money to sign a center and also allows rook- ie combo guard Austin Rivers, the 10th overall pick out of Duke in last month's NBA draft, to see more playing time next season. The trade was still pend- ing until a series of other moves paved the way for the complicated deal. The Sixers will use the amnesty clause on Elton Brand and the $18.1 million he's owed in the final season of a five-year contract — a move that has to happen for the Wright trade to go through. 1B Thursday July 12, 2012 Philadelphia also agreed to deals with forward Lavoy Allen and center Spencer Hawes and a one-year con- tract with veteran swing- man Nick Young. Young's arrival allowed the Sixers to part ways with reserve guard Lou Williams. Wright also becomes the 3-point threat needed after Philadelphia decided to not re-sign Jodie Meeks. The 6-foot-9 Wright is due about $4 million in the final year of his contract— TOUR DE FRANCE Voeckler wins Tour's 10th stage in Alps VALSERINE, France (AP) — Thomas Voeckler nearly opted out of the Tour de France weeks ago because of an injured knee. Two days before the start, he was pained even more over allegations of doping by his French team. On Wednesday, the BELLEGARDE-SUR- Sharks assistant gener- al manager Wayne Thomas said in a state- ment that ''our organiza- tions share the same pas- sion to put a strong, com- petitive product on the ice, as well as being an active member in our shared Bay Area communities.'' The Bulls open their inaugural season Oct. 12. Voeckler, too, was bur- dened by the issue of dop- ing. Two days before the Tour start, a French news- paper brought to light a previously unknown probe crowd-pleasing Frenchman gave his response — by winning the 10th stage. An in-your-face, trash- talking atmosphere domi- nated as riders entered the Alps on Wednesday with Bradley Wiggins retaining the yellow jersey by squashing attacks by rivals — one of whom com- plained that the Briton was- n't being respectful. The mood was decided- ly sour before the 120.9- mile ride began along three hard climbs, after Tues- day's rest day was marred by an arrest by French police of a Cofidis team rider over a Marseille dop- ing probe. of his Europcar team on allegations of improper use of a controlled corticoid by its riders during last year's Tour — a claim the team vigorously denies. Some fans in Belgium, where the Tour started on June 30, booed Europcar riders following the news. Voeckler's victory was ''really special because we had criticism before the Tour, because it really hurt me,'' he said. His victory ''is a part of my answer — not my revenge — an answer'' to the critics. Wiggins, too, and his Team Sky sent a message on Wednesday: Getting the yellow jersey off him won't be easy. Italy's Vincenzo Nibali, one of several rivals who tried to strip it, com- plained of a lack of respect from the Briton. At several points during the stage, Wiggins came under attack from his biggest rivals, but nearly all failed to make up any ground. Nibali tried to surge ahead in a big descent, Belgium's Jurgen Van Den Broeck attempted to jump ahead on the day's big climb, and reigning champion Cadel Evans tried to shake Wiggins near the end — to no avail. ''Wiggins looked at me The 10th stage is 120.9 miles.Thomas Voeckler has won three Tour stages in his career. at the finish and I really did not like the way he did it,'' said Nibali, who won the Spanish Vuelta in 2010 and is fourth overall at the Tour. ''He also gestured with his hand in an unpleasant way. ''They are really strong at the moment, but he should show more respect for his competitors,'' Nibali said. Tour in a style reminiscent of that of the former U.S. Postal team of Lance Arm- strong, who is facing alle- gations by U.S. anti-doping officials that he used per- formance-enhancing drugs. Wiggins has bristled at the comparison of the teams in social media. On Wednesday, notably after the new Cofidis case, the Briton said he under- stood questions on doping in cycling ''from some parts of the media,'' but insisted he got to where he is through hard work. ''I don't feel like I have to sit here and justify to everyone ... To me, it's them pissing all over every- thing I've done by just say- ing 'he's cheating' — or whatever. And that's what really gets to me,'' he said. Wiggins also echoed comments in the past by Armstrong, who repeatedly said he never failed a drug test and said during his career that he was the world's most-tested athlete for doping. ''Tested by the UCI — God knows how many times a year, God knows how many times on this race, and on the Dauphine; blood tested every morning and all that,'' Wiggins said, Sky has controlled the referring to international cycling's governing body UCI and the Criterium du Dauphine race. ''What more can I do than that?'' For the first time in the Tour, the peloton scaled the 10.9-mile Grand Colom- bier pass — classified as one of the hardest climbs in pro cycling in part for two tough patches with steep, 12 percent gradients. Voeckler, who once had the yellow jersey taken off him by Armstrong and wore it again last year for 10 days, earned his third Tour stage victory in a decade-long career com- peting in cycling's premier race. Near the finish, Voeck- ler dusted off a breakaway group, beating runner-up Michele Scarponi of Italy by 3 seconds. Jens Voigt of Germany — at 40, the old- est rider this year — was third, another 4 seconds slower. Voeckler said he didn't ride for about 10 of the 20 days immediately preced- ing the Tour start because of knee pain that still hasn't fully gone away — and almost kept him from com- peting altogether. With so many one-year deals, the Sixers are clearly aiming to have plenty money available to deal in the 2013 free agent market. They also have a player who can make an immedi- ate impact. Wright averaged 16.4 points and started all 82 games during the 2010-11 season. He led the league in 3-pointers made (194) and finished third in voting for the NBA's Most Improved Player award behind Kevin Love and LaMarcus Aldridge. But his playing time slipped under rookie coach Mark Jackson and so did his performance. Wright averaged 10.3 points and started 61 of 66 games dur- ing the lockout-shortened season.
