ByHillelItalie and Karl Ritter The Associated Press NEW YORK BobDylan,No- bel laureate. In the book world's equivalent of a Su- preme Court ruling, the No- bel judges declared Thurs- day that Dylan is not just a rock star but a poet of the very highest order. Dylan, 75, becomes the first musician in the 115- year history of the Nobel to win the prize in literature. He was honored for "hav- ing created new poetic ex- pressions within the great American song tradition." It is the ultimate as- cension for the man who set off a lasting debate over whether lyrics, espe- cially rock lyrics, can be re- garded as art. Dylan, who gave the world "Like a Roll- ing Stone," "Blowin' in the Wind" and dozens of other standards, now finds him- self on a list that includes Samuel Beckett, Toni Mor- rison and T.S. Eliot, whom Dylan referred to in his epic song "Desolation Row." "Congratulations to one of my favorite poets, Bob Dylan, on a well-deserved Nobel," tweeted President Barack Obama, who in 2012 presented the singer-song- writer with a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Dylan rarely gives inter- views, and a representative said the star had no imme- diate comment. He is on tour and was scheduled to play in Las Vegas on Thurs- day night. The startling announce- ment out of Stockholm was met with both euphoria and dismay. Many fans already quote Dylan as if he were Shake- speare, there are entire college courses and schol- arly volumes devoted to his songs, and judges work Dylan quotations into their legal opinions all the time, such as "The times they are a-changing" and "You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows." Others, though, lamented a lost moment for books. Critics can argue whether "Visions of Johanna" is as literary as "Waiting for Go- dot," but Dylan's stature among musicians is unchal- lenged. He is the most in- fluential songwriter of his time, who brought a new depth, range and complex- ity to rock lyrics and freed Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell and countless other artists to break out from the once-narrow boundaries of love and dance songs. Dylan already was the only rock star to receive a Pulitzer Prize (an honor- ary one), and is, in fact, an author, too: He was nomi- nated for a National Book Critics Circle prize for his memoir, "Chronicles: Vol- ume One." He is the first Ameri- can to win the Nobel lit- erature prize since Morri- son in 1993, and his award probably hurts the chances of such older American writers as Philip Roth and Don DeLillo, since the No- bel judges try to spread the honors around. Dylan's life has been a hybrid of popular and lit- erary influences. A native of Duluth, Minnesota, he worshipped Elvis Presley and James Dean as a boy, but also read voraciously and seemed to absorb vir- tually every style of Ameri- can music. His lyrics have referred to (and sometimes lifted from) the Bible, Civil War poetry and Herman Mel- ville. 1ST MUSICIAN TO WIN Something is happening: Dylan wins Nobel in literature CHRISPIZZELLO—THEASSOCIATEDPRESSFILE Bob Dylan performs in Los Angeles. By Denis D. Gray and Todd Pitman The Associated Press BANGKOK King Bhumibol Adulyadej, revered in Thai- land as a demigod, a hum- ble father figure and an an- chor of stability through de- cades of upheaval at home and abroad, died Thursday. He was 88 and had been the world's longest reign- ing monarch. The Royal Palace said Bhumibol died "in a peace- ful state" at Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok, where he had been treated for various health problems for most of the past decade. During a reign that spanned 70 years, Bhumi- bol became much more than Thailand's constitu- tional monarch. He was the nation's one constant as governments rose and fell, a gentle leader who used his influence to unify the nation and rally troops through the Cold War as Thailand's neighbors fell under communist control. In his heyday, the frail- looking, soft-spoken man in spectacles wielded so much power and respect he was able to squelch coups and rebellions with a gesture or a few well-chosen words. Bhumibol was viewed by many in the majority Buddhist nation as a bo- dhisattva, or holy being who delays entering nir- vana to aid the human race. But while junta lead- ers, prime ministers and courtiers approached him only on their knees, Bhu- mibol was remarkably down-to-earth. He hiked into impoverished villages and remote rice paddies to assess the state of his country. He played a half- dozen musical instruments and jammed with Ameri- can jazz greats including Benny Goodman. Bhumibol was the world's richest monarch and one of the planet's wealthiest people: Forbes magazine estimated his fortune at more than $30 billion in 2011. In the last decade, Bhu- mibol withdrew from public life due to illness and was often ensconced at Siriraj Hospital. His wife, Queen Sirikit, has also long been ailing and has been seen even more rarely. Hundreds of weeping mourners stood outside the hospital Thursday, chanting prayers and looking up at the building. Since army-staged coups in 2006 and 2014, politi- cal rivals had increasingly invoked the need to pro- tect the palace as a pretext to gain or hold power, and some politicians have been sidelined by opponents who accused them of disrespect- ing the king, a grave crime in this Southeast Asian country. Although Bhumi- bol once said he is not above criticism, Thailand's lese majeste law — the world's harshest — has been rou- tinely employed in recent years, with anyone charged with defaming the palace facing 15 years in jail. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said Crown Prince Maha Vajiralong- korn will become the new monarch, in accordance with the constitution. He said the government will notify the National Legis- lative Assembly, or parlia- ment, of the succession.
