In the 200 freestyle, she won and went 2:13.54, which is the third-fastest time in school history. In the 100 breast- stroke, she went 1:10.93. Fletcher grabbed two second places in the 100 freestyle (1:03.90) and the 100 breaststroke (1:20.21). Julia Brandt, swimming just one event due to ill- ness, placed third in the 50 freestyle (27.54), which is the eighth-fastest time in school history. Stevie McKenzie finished third in the 100 butterfly (1:18.26) and fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:18.65). Jor- dan Munoz placed fifth in the 100 freestyle (1:04.67) and went a personal-best 28.91 for a sixth-place fin- ish in the 50 freestyle. Megan Snodgrass placed fourth in the 200 IM (3:05.44). The relay team of Jayne Brandt, Fletcher, Munoz and McKenzie won both the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay. Freshman Jaxon Balken continued his winning ways by placing first in the 200 freestyle (1:54.60), which is the fifth-fast- est time in school history. Balken won the 100 fly (58.41). Holiday Rider cap- tured first place in the 100 backstroke (1:04.98) and placed third in the 100 fly (1:04.88). Quinn Rosser broke the 25-second barrier in the 50 freestyle, going 24.98, and won the event. Rosser also placed third in the 100 freestyle (59.94). Patterson was out- touched by .02 to get sec- ond place in the 100 breast- stroke (1:12.39); he also fin- ished second in the 100 freestyle (57.84). Fregoso finished second in the 50 freestyle (26.25) and fourth in the 100 back- stroke (1:09.47) and Mar- ple finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke. TherelayteamofBalken, Rider, Fregoso and Patter- son won both the 200 med- ley relay and the 200 free- style relay. The Spartans will travel to Enterprise High School on Thursday for the EAL Championships. Swimming FROM PAGE 1 mendous asset for us. He's done historic things. But, look, obviously, we want to make Madison a Giant for a long, long time to come — well beyond his current contract." Although Bumgarner has brushed off any ques- tions about the fairness of his current contract, it's clear that he is thinking ahead. He changed agents twice during this past sea- son, moving from Excel Sports to Relativity to The Legacy Group, headed by Greg Genske. In 2009, Genske negoti- ated the $161 million con- tract between the Yankees and CC Sabathia that set records at the time for a pitcher. A historic extension for Bumgarner would repre- sent a significant invest- ment for the Giants. Ide- ally, they would wait one more year to make such a huge commitment. That's because right- hander Johnny Cueto can opt out of his six-year, $130 million contract after next season — something he is likely to do if he follows up his stellar Giants debut year with another solid campaign. But if Cueto were to sus- tain a significant injury next year, he almost cer- tainly would not opt out, leaving the Giants with $84 million of dead money and much less financial flexibility as a result. Extending Bumgarner on top of that would mean assuming a ton of risk. Evans said Cueto's opt- out would not affect how the team makes moves this offseason, nor has he been in touch with the right-hander's agent about tweaking the deal. "We're continuing to make sure that he loves the city and his teammates and other things to make sure that becomes a hard decision," Evans said. • With the back end of the bullpen a top priority, Evans said the Giants plan for Eduardo Núñez to be their primary third base- man next season and look internally at Mac William- son and Jarrett Parker — two players who "exude power potential" — to fill their vacancy in left field. The Giants also have every intention to tender a contract to postseason hero Conor Gillaspie. "I love Núñez on an ev- eryday basis," Evans said. "There's some fire offen- sively and athletically, and he did a nice job defen- sively." Evans mentioned former Giants prospect Adam Du- vall, who hit 33 home runs for the Cincinnati Reds this season, and said, "we proj- ect that both Williamson and Parker to have more power." "It's important to value our internal options ap- propriately, and that gives some guidance on what we'll pursue externally," Evans said. "As I look to- ward 2017, I really appreci- ate the value that William- son and Parker can bring in left." Both Angel Pagan and Gregor Blanco are free agents. Pagan will not be re-signed, and the emer- gence of Gorkys Hernandez might bring an end to Blan- co's tenure with the club. • Buster Posey set ca- reer highs in starts behind the plate (102) and innings caught (1,069 2/3), and Ev- ans acknowledged the wear and tear likely contributed to his career-low .434 slug- ging percentage. Posey hit just 14 home runs — three after the All-Star break — while dealing with a sore back and hand injuries. Here comes the annual question about moving Posey to another position … and here comes the an- swer. "He's 29 years old, and we still feel very confi- dent that's the best spot for him," Evans said. "I wouldn't be surprised if you saw a little better num- bers from him next year." • Ty Blach's contribu- tions down the stretch made it clear to manage- ment that he is ready to open next season as the No.5 starter. But there's that $20 million salary that Matt Cain will make in the final guaranteed year of his contract. Evans said Cain could be converted to long relief, but will get a shot to win back a starting job this spring. "Matt wants to be a starting pitcher, and he'll come to spring training ex- pecting every opportunity to start, and he deserves that," Evans said. "We look at having six viable start- ers going into spring train- ing and we'll let that play out. But Matt Cain has ob- viously meant a lot to the organization. I really as- sociate his name with ev- ery one of these champion- ships in different ways. And as you look toward 2017, we'll have to decipher that. But it's good to have depth and options and that's a strength of ours. Matt is such an important part of this franchise, we have to be mindful of how we put that rotation to- gether.: • Evans said the Giants plan to tender a contract to right-hander George Kontos, who is eligible for his second year of arbitra- tion. ... The Giants expect another incremental in- crease in payroll, which was roughly $185 million this past season. They have more than $50 mil- lion coming off the books, but must commit $30 mil- lion in raises to arbitra- tion players and others; they backloaded contracts to Cueto, Jeff Samardzija and Denard Span, who will earn higher salaries in 2017. Giants FROM PAGE 1 day that Garnett would be the starter. "It's a work in progress," Kelly said. "Josh played more, he played about 20 snaps (against Arizona), he'll continue to play more. We'll just see how that goes. Hopefully you'll see both of those guys." • Gabbert, and not Christian Ponder, would be the backup quarterback for the 49ers against Buffalo, Kelly said. • Kelly seemed amused when asked if a comment regarding Kaepernick's ascension and the depth of the roster was a thinly veiled shot at the roster as- sembled by general man- ager Trent Baalke. On Tuesday, Kelly said elevating Kaepernick was "really one of the only ma- neuvers we could make based on our roster depth." Asked to clarify that comment Thursday, Kelly said, "You look at every po- sition we have on offense, we rotate. All three run- ning backs play. Five re- ceivers are up, they play. All three tight ends play. We're rotating on the offen- sive line ... the only position we hadn't made a move at was quarterback. That's all I meant by that." • Rookie defensive end DeForest Buckner, who missed the Arizona game, was limited in practice Thursday, but said he is good to go for Buffalo. "I definitely feel better this week with the time off that we had," Buckner said. "I wanted to play, but had to be smart. I proba- bly would have hurt the team more if I went in and played as hurt as I was. It was a smart decision, mak- ing the goal to come back this week. So far, so good." Cornerback Jimmie Ward (quadriceps) did not practice. Those who were limited aside from Buck- ner included guard Zane Beadles (ankle), linebacker Ahmad Brooks (groin), de- fensive tackle Quinton Dial (knee), defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey (knee), de- fensive tackle Glenn Dorsey (knee), wide receiver Jer- emy Kerley (ankle), tight end Vance McDonald (hip) and safety Jaquiski Tart (quadriceps). Buffalo defensive tackle Marcell Dareus (ham- string) missed practice for the second straight day and may not face the 49ers. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 Scoreboard Football AMERICANCONFERENCE WEST DIVISION W L T Pct PF PA Oakland 4 1 0 .800 142 137 Denver 4 2 0 .667 140 108 Kansas City 2 2 0 .500 83 92 San Diego 2 4 0 .333 173 155 EAST DIVISION W L T Pct PF PA New England 4 1 0 .800 114 74 Buffalo 3 2 0 .600 117 87 N.Y.
